We like the P C yellow label baked beans better than the "real" Heinz ones.

It was almost full of extremely old prim looking people with white hair picking away at who knows what, and they couldn't help stopping and staring and the big cartoon thought bubbles all had CRADLE!! in them, (being able to read those is only one of my superpowers). Except for a couple of 30 or 40 something daughters helping their parents along I was easily the youngest person, even in my state of advanced middle age. Tiny jars of Marmite, mustard, larger ones of Branston pickle, onions, all arranged like trophys on a few shelves, and quite pricey. the can of Heinz Beans was $3, (welcome to Inuvik!) And there was no pot noodle so I left, 40 or so rheumy eyes trying to burn a hole in my back. I didn't have the courage to stop and read the chalkboard menu.

You have tea rooms in Saskatchewan ?

This one gets a 92% rating on Urbanspoon, which is pretty decent. 13 reviews and nothing bad about the food but 2/3 just mention ambience and tea, service etc. I'll probably go for lunch sometime and try it. Reservations are reccommended (it was nearly full when I popped in and it isn't big). The only neg reviews were from an Englander who thought they were gouging on groceries (beans $2 @ Walmart, wtf?) and someone who didn't like the hours. Go on Urbanspoon or google Vintage Tea Room.
The best beans here used to be Libby's but not since the '70s. They left Canada and the ones showing up now in the dollar stores are from the states and they aren't the same.

I think I will have to visit the other one is Sask as the one I have been going to hasn't had any. I want to just eat them and the kids want them crumbled on their hot chocolates with squirty cream and marshmallows. Very happy about the Branston Pickle though and we found excellent cheese in Walmart too, it's called Coastal and is a real, crumbly cheddar! Just under $6 for 200g.

Found this little le Creuset in the Sally Ann yesterday for $4 and it fits right in the toaster oven - had beans written all over it. At this halfway point where you add liquid so they don't dry out I rinsed out the nearly empty bbq sauce bottle and added that.

On the subject of UK baked beans..........

In Calgary some Walmart stores have a little British section which is useful. However, whenever I call in they hardly ever actually have any cans of UK beans in stock........

Any other stores in Calgary known to stock these gourmet items?

only & always buy the canned 'Baked Beans' when they're on special - stock up 10x at a time. Beans must be the with 'Molasses with pork' variety. Not too fussy on the brand - price dictates

Sobeys own brand (compliments?) aren't too bad either- the Heinz UK-style seems tricky to track down in TO, only Loblaws seems to have them.

Why do you say that? I have steered clear of the Molasses ones as I thought they might be overly sweet? I'm very fond of a baked bean, but haven't tried them here as the rest of the family don't like them...

Heinz beans on cheese on toast....oh yum:thumbup:

I'm with you- can't understand why there's so much sugar/ sweetness in everything over here.

The chipotle chili Heinz beans are great though...

to add to my post #26

its like everything else that comes with time & age - things change, habits change so do your taste buds. After 47 years in Canada there isn't anything that I cannot eat - its just that I eat what I like.

The so called 'good old' bland British foods that are crap.

Wait till you believe that Canadian made beer is the best in the world
