Default Questions about Malta

Hi there, I'm a young Brit living in France, probably staying in France for the long term, but will possibly be moving to Malta for a bit in the autumn (for a 6-month internship as part of my studies). I have a bunch of questions and it'd be great if someone already living there could help me out. I've had a look online but can't find much practical info beyond the fact that they use three-pin plugs.

How does the cost of living compare to other European countries? I've heard property is very expensive if you're buying but what about monthly rent for an apartment/studio?

How does the healthcare system work?

And of course now I've managed to forget the rest of my questions...perhaps I'll remember later, but those are probably the two biggies for the moment. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

If you have your EHIC card (emergency health card) from UK this should tide you over in Malta

Your accoms are directly related to the area your living in..if you look around on some of the rental and sales agencies for Malta you will soon get a feel for the areas if you do your geography research along with google maps/satellite

I have seen small studio places called maisonettes with a garden for $279 approx' and then prices go up from there.

Look for a place that has washing machine (dryers are rare) and tv included in rent...water is expensive as all water comes from the desalination plant.

Parts of Sliema and Valetta can be busy and noisy for traffic and shopping due to the age and may be not areas of choice . go to Franksalt and start there looking for apts and rentals..

Imported goods to the island are more expensive but if your diet includes plenty fruit and veg then the locally grown is well cheap you'll find

Bus travel is super cheap they say

Another way to find out things about Malta is to visit their blogs on the Malta expats sites
Hope thats a help

Thank you for your reply. For accommodation I forgot to specify that I'd be working in Mosta. I'm finding things out little by little, seems lovely!

New question: how open are the local people? Is it easy to make friends with the Maltese, particularly people in their 20s/30s? How do they react to a foreigner trying to speak Maltese?
