If no one local comes along with post-Brexit "been there, done that" advice, check with the Malta High Commission in London about the visa(s) (depending on your marital status, age of children, etc...) you will need.
If your children are of school age, you should also consider their future higher education, and anticipate the possibility that they might wish to return to the UK at 18.
I live in France and can't advise more, but the above questions are universal - Visa issues since Brexit are primordial, and, IMO, education in a foreign country, even though English is an official language, comes a close second.
Good luck with your plans, but Research is the word!

we stayed in Malta for quite a period of time. In general, it is small and the infrastructures are not great. Each time after the heavy rain, it gets flooded easily. many roads are just one way so you may need to consider this factor when driving. If you have residence card, you can enjoy the free bus as the government offers residents free ride on bus. all the buses go to Valetta so even if you travel from one side to the other of the island, you still need to transit in or near Valetta. St Julians is good with skyscrapers with huge amount of expats.

And of course if you do not have an EU passport you need to have a Visa-and you will need to show how you are going to live financially-pension/job/combination-there are minimum income requirements for TCNs throughout the EU the level of which varies with the country- but find out if you can get a Visa before doing anything else-
