Default Advice on Residency Journey

Hi there,

I am wondering if anyone has any advice on sharing the journey of switching jobs from UK to Malta and becoming a non-UK resident ? I have read the mind-boggling 105 page ‘guidance’ by the HMRC and quite honestly my eyeballs have only just stopped spinning around in their sockets !! Def needed a marmalade sandwich after that. Anyhow, it is a great opportunity for my family, not without some risk of course (good well paid role) but I am really unclear as to the residency tests relative to the UK. I have a UK accountant who will help of course but was hoping to get some feedback from people who have actually done the same thing. Would like to get the foundations laid properly so to speak. Thank you !

Why won't you contact local agents, who deal with those questions? You are right that the process is full of misc piculiarities. Try any of them like
https://privilegedpassport.com/residency/ My classmate moved there and using the agent will make it smooth.

Generally and your UK accountant will advise on your particular situation , it takes 3 years from leaving the UK to be fully non res.. for various tax issues.- you can only go back for certain number of days etc .. particularly in year one. There are days and 'ties' to be considered. Expert advice is essential. Of course being non res may not benefit you it depends on your circumstances. Capital gains tax is paid in UK by non residents for example on property now.

you can set off tax allowances between malta and uk and probably you will have to fill in tax returns in both countries. they have a double taxation agreeement.

on tax in malta if you are employed it will be deducted automatically. use an accountant in malta for this and residency issues which they handle. you need to register for a resident card after 90 days,, based on employment self sufficiency, student, retired etc under EU rules. Again the accountant in Malta can register you wtih the inland revenue here and help with the paperwork. Basically you will need your UK accounant and your Maltese one for the transition.
