Hi All,
I've, just accepted a new role that will be based in Subang Jaya & I'm looking for some advice on where to live, if any of you could help me?
Ideally, I would like to be somewhere that isn't a long commute with excess traffic in the mornings, but has a reasonable ex pat (English/Western) community around where I can meet people to socialise. I'm 27 and like to go out at weekends bars etc so somewhere that this is possible would be ideal.
Thanks in advance
Ben

Try using the search function using the word "subang" and use the filter tools to search 'entire posts' and 'Malaysia' forum. Hopefully that will bring up some relevant posts.
I noticed that one of the users 'abdulawwal' is located in Subang Jaya so he may be able to advise you.
Once you have made three 'posts' you could send him a Private Message (PM).
Good luck!

Welcome to Subang, Ben,
I am in USJ 16... the only 'mat salleh' in Subang USJ 16 ! , but a nice safe quiet place to live.
There is plenty happening in the Subang area for 27 year olds.. and other areas nearby.
KL town is crowded and expensive, but not that far if you fancy meeting lots of tourists on a more adventurous night out.
There are lots of colleges in Subang area so that has increased the nightlife and eateries in Subang/Puchong/Ara Damansara area.
I assume you want an apartment... suggest you look at some of the new developments around Subang and Ara Damansara.
The MRT extension into Subang should open next year, but you are going to need a car if working around here.
There are not that many young expats in KL these days.. most of us are older and started growing roots years ago.
For list of best places then PM me... once you have made 3 posts.

Thank for this info meinkl, it's very much appreciated. I will have a car supplied by my company, so that part is ok. (I hear the roads are interesting, to say the least!)
Yes, I think apartment living would be best for me initially. I will have an agent to show me around for 3 days when I have spent some time here to help with finding the most suitable place to live.
Thanks again!

best explanation for the term is at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mat_Salleh_Rebellion
... it does not come from 'mad sailor', as any Sabahan will tell you. :-)
Dont rush into getting a place, presumably the company will put you up in a hotel, so spend the time checking online and newspapers as the agents are known to up prices to get higher commission, especially if they know what your allowance is.
Get other agents to work for you as well. Rental prices have actully gone down in some areas since the late 90's boom.
However, check the daily traffic to from your work, as you could end up the wrong side of Kesas highway / LDP , and end up spending 1 hour to do 5 km. PM me if you need more details.
Avoid Goodyear flats in USJ and some of the flats near the Federal highway...
"flats" are walk up very basic. RM1000 or less pcm
"apartments" more upmarket with lifts, some good/ some not so, depends where. RM1000-2000
"condominiums" up market with parking space, security, pool etc. RM1500 - 2500
Most will be partly furnished. Make sure you get a parking space!!
Same type of places in KL centre would be 2 or 3 times that.
Mid terrace 3 bed house in Subang/USJ/Puching around 1500 to 2500 depending on area.

meinkl,
Yes they will, for the initial 6 months starting in November I will travel regular to and from the U.K while my Visas etc are processed, so hopefully this will give me a good idea of areas and then when I commence my work full time over here I'll be given 60 days in a hotel and the assistance of a local estate agent to find somewhere.
Your idea on prices is where I hoped they would be, so that is good to know.
I seem to have lots of questions but actually thinking of them escapes me, it's just an overload of information at the moment, so I'm sure I'll be in touch in the near future.
Thank you again for your help it's been much appreciated.

Good luck... and Subang to KLIA is a much easier journey than from KL. Get your own flight tickets and claim back so you can get an MAS Enrich card asap and rack up the airmiles.. useful later for holidays or upgrades.
