Tesco
I see they are pulling out of Malaysia.
Not that they are very good there. Aeon must be laughing. |
Re: Tesco
Really? Haven't heard anything about this. Bit odd as Malaysia is one of their few profitable overseas businesses.
Carrefour recently pulled out, its stores purchased by Aeon. |
Re: Tesco
On Bloomberg earlier on.
Big losses everywhere. |
Re: Tesco
can't find anything about a Tesco pullout from Malaysia

Not that they are very good there. Aeon must be laughing. If Bloomberg says Tesco is pulling out of Malaysia, I think they are mistaken. Can you provide a link to the story? According to Tesco's Strategic Update yesterday (2nd October): Our focus on disciplined international growth has seen us further reduce our capital investment overseas, with a greater proportion allocated to those markets which offer us significant growth potential and the opportunity to deliver strong returns, such as Korea, Malaysia and Thailand. That sounds like the opposite of a Malaysia pull-out to me! JC3 |
Re: Tesco
Bit strange as they've built the big Tesco near straits quay. That seems to be doing a whole lot better than rivals Cold Storage. Even got a few reasonably priced bottles of wine in there now :D

Anyway it's what I saw on Bloomberg and we'll all have to wait and see. For us when we are in Malaysia we always look in Tesco but end up buying from Aeon. |
Re: Tesco
I wish "Tescos" would either buck up or buck off! The store at Bukit Indah (?) is rubbish.
|
Re: Tesco
Yes I should've said Reasonably priced, comparatively speaking :D
Have to say I am warming to Tesco. I used to prefer Cold storage but that's gone totally downhill. Tesco has a good selection of fruits and veggies usually and a lot of produce is cheaper than cold storage. |

. www.bloomberg.com/video/ tesco-cfo-says-central-europe- hurting-earnings-kCz77hCfSdyRAt6defFvLA.htm Towards the end of the video he says Tesco has a leading position in Malaysia, and that Tesco has created a great business in Asia. There's no mention of Tesco pulling out of Malaysia. What exactly did you see, and where? Are you sure it was on Bloomberg? JC3 |

Re: Tesco
the Tesco's in JB are pitiful so no big loss, if true. These huge international companies take forever to act on what they decide - closing down could take a year. Likely any decent stores would be sold to someone else (or some new company will buy leases... on top x number of current locations...).
Tesco pulled out of the USA (they invested in new small stores they created - Fresh and Easy) it took a long time to actually get out. I don't see anything on Bloomberg's web site about it. |

Re: Tesco
Simple Google search shows no reference to Tesco pulling out of Malaysia. They are, however, pulling back in other countries such as China and the US.
Sure it's not the first time Bloomberg has got it wrong. |
Re: Tesco
If Tesco do pulls out from Malaysia, the first thing I would miss is their free parking :(

Sure it's not the first time Bloomberg has got it wrong. It’s much more likely that any reference regarding a ‘pull-out from Malaysia’ made by Bloomberg in fact related to Carrefour selling its Malaysian operations to Japan's Aeon Co. Ltd. That’s nothing to do with Tesco. Tesco’s interim results (2nd October 2013) are positive about the growth potential in Malaysia. With 47 stores here and £937m revenue in 2012/13, there’s still plenty of growth opportunity for Tesco in Malaysia - especially from its own-label products, ready meals and internet retailing. Indeed, the Tesco plc website (aimed principally at investors) states: 'Our business in Malaysia continues to offer us a significant long-term opportunity, particularly as we launch dotcom operations in 2013. Our physical presence comes through a network of hypermarkets, which are serviced by two state of the art distribution centres in Selangor. Since the launch of the business in 2002, we’ve opened many stores across Peninsular Malaysia, with combined floor space of almost 4 million square feet. We operate in partnership with local conglomerate, Sime Darby, which has allowed us to leverage strong local knowledge on entering a new market.' Time to can the ‘pull-out’ red herring. JC3 |

Re: Tesco
Do any of the supermarkets here offer home delivery service or online ordering & home delivery service?
That would be so helpful! TIA |
Re: Tesco
Yes, Tesco does in parts of the Klang Valley.
|
Re: Tesco
Really? You wouldn't happen to know which stores would you?
Is it online & delivery or do you have to make a trip to the store, pay and then organise it? Sorry for the million questions! |
Re: Tesco
You order online and it is delivered.
If you go to their website you can enter your area to see if they offer delivery there. I had deliveries made to Bangsar and Damansara Heights. |
Re: Tesco
Thanks so much for this brilliant information!
I'll let you know how we get on. :D |
Re: Tesco
Pleasure. :)

Google Tesco online

Re: Tesco
A Tesco delivery van pulled out in front of my earlier on today in a residential area if that provides any more hints as to whether the home delivery system has found its way to Malaysia.
|
Re: Tesco
I've had a look at their online system, doesn't seem to bad. However, after speaking to a few friends there seems to be mixed reviews on the service.
Thinking of just giving it a go on a small selection for delivery first before going all out on a monthly shop! ;0) |
Re: Tesco
We've used them quite a bit recently and have been very happy with the service. There is a RM10 service charge for picking and delivery but we've received email and SMS offers offering RM20 off if you spend more than RM100 so not bad value. Prices are the same as in store, and all offers appear to be available.
Never purchased meat or fresh produce such as veggies from them as I'd rather see and select what I'm buying but for drinks, washing powder etc it's dead simple. One thing to watch though is that if the specific product is not available they will bring a substitute. Usually inferior. They do adjust the price but you may be compelled to take it as you need it. We also recently bought 24 cans of coke lite as 4 x 6 can packs at a certain price. They arrived with 24 individual cans which cost about RM4 more than 4 x 6 packs! Sneaky! |
Re: Tesco
We used to use home delivery from Tesco in Norfolk UK and had exactly the same problems. Bloody annoying isn't it.
