Default PET/CT Scan...need help.

Hi Guys
My surgeon in Bali recommends I have a PETCT Scan to detect errant cancer cells. There isn't a PETCT machine in Bali and the one in Jakarta is broken.
I looked at Singapore and Bangkok hospitals with a PETCT machine but their price is around US$2500 (RM11,000) for each scan.

KL has a facility called PETCT Asia which offers the same for RM2,000 and I wondered if this place is genuine as the price seems so low. This is their website and I've had email confirming I can make an appointment...
PET-CT Scan | Singapore & Malaysia

My question is..... has anyone tried this facility or have any information to offer.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Davita,

I'm no expert, but a PET/CT scan may have different resolutions (on the CT component) and that might account for the price variation? But honestly, if Bangkok and Singapore have both quoted similar prices, I'd be just a tad suspicious about a RM2,000 tag... that's just me however, and your mileage may vary obviously

Good luck!

Davita,

if you want a second opinion or second cost estimation, you could consider contacting the Adventist Hospital in Penang. They seem to have a PET/CT scanning facility.

Bangkok prices depend on type of hospital. Not many have a PET. Best to tell them you don't have insurance. This may bring down the price. Check Bangkok Mission Hospital (Adventist) if they have a PET. It is a good hospital. Avoid Praram 9 hospital. They have a PET but I would not rely on their skills. If Singapore and Bkk are same price, use Singapore.

Unfortunately I don´t know what a PET is, but a CT scan in Pantai hospital costs around RM 700. MRI scan is about RM 1100.

You could look at Chiangmai:

For contact call. Email is hopeless.

There are several govt. hospitals in Bangkok which have a PET but language is an issue. Prices are lower in these hospitals. Waiting is long. Treatment is excellent.

I agree with Sushifan, get a quote from Penang Adventist Hospital. They are reasonably priced, I have used them for various ailments.

Thanks everyone for the help.
I've had a few quotes from....
Bangkok Hospital....THB68,000 (US$1900)
Phuket Bangkok Hospital...no PETCT machine
Singapore National University....No price, just a questionnaire response about when was I last in Saudi???
Singapore General Hospital ...S$3340 (US$2350)
Radlink Singapore...S$2360 (US$1680)

I didn't think of Penang as we don't have any direct flight but I'll email Adventist as I've been there...in 1957 or thereabouts.
Siloam Hospital in Jakarta may have their machine fixed next week and I have just received an 'off the cuff' quote of Rp11,000,000 (US$825)

Sorry for the late reply. I have quite a bit of experience of PET/CT scans, having had many in various hospitals and clinics in London, Dubai, Singapore and Malaysia. I had two PET/CT scans in Penang, at the Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital. On both occasions I was very happy with the process, indeed the procedure followed was the same as at all the other PET/CT scans I had.

Mount Miriam was by far the cheapest of them all (that was not the reason for my going there - I was living in Penang at the time). They do the scans at cost price because they are a not-for-profit hospital. The scanner is operational on only one day a week, because a specialist comes from KL to conduct the tests.

Thanks TJD I've been in touch with Miriam and this is the nice response....
"Kindly be informed that a PET-CT Scan in our hospital may cost from RM3900-RM4380 depending on the consultant's recommendation for a scan with contrast or without contrast. It is our standard practice that the PET-CT Scan is scheduled on every Thursday unless if the patient load is too many then we may open up slots on Wednesday. Please be informed that we may not be able to schedule for a PET-CT unless you have seen our consultant for the first consultation. Our consultant may have to look into the patient's medical reports and physical condition first of all. Therefore, we seek for your kind cooperation to come in for the consultation first before we could proceed further.

Also, from Penang Adventist....
"In response to your enquiry, kindly note that the estimation price for the PET Scan is about RM 4000++, in which it does not include any other tests that may be done before or after the procedure."

From LohGuanLye....
"Yes, we have PET-CT with FDG scan. The cost is RM 4399.00. If IV contrast is needed, there will be an additional charge.
We usually run Pet-CT on every Tuesday to Thursday. Please let us know your preferred date.
As for the payment, we require a deposit of RM 3000.00 to confirm the appointment."

I'm coming to Penang for a trip in a couple of weeks and leaning towards the Adventist as it seems more active with 6 consultant oncologists.

I appreciate all help to come to a decision.

Davita, have a good trip to Penang. I hope that your local doctor will be happy with the results you will be bringing back. I guess that they will give you a CD with all images obtained.
