I am hoping to move to Penang to live ,renting, i am retired and do not drive so looking for a quite place near a beach, shops and public transport and recommendations please?.

Most expat apartments and condo's located around Gurney, Tanjung Tokong, Tanjung Bungah are within 2 - 10 min walk to shopping malls, restaurants, hocker food, and food market. If you are interested in a Beach area... then Batu Feringgi will probable require you to have a car to get around. Local buses, Taxis and Grab Taxis are cheap and fairly easy to get around with. Let a rental agent know that you are interested in, and they will modify the search area accordingly.

Unless you want the associated sea view I wouldn't say that Penang beaches are that great.
