Love Bread?
#46

Here in Penang, I’m still searching for the perfect butter croissant for breakfast.
I want it lovingly constructed with layers of fine thin pastry.
I want that classic horn shape.
I want that telltale greasy film it leaves on your fingers.
I want a crusty exterior.
I want a soft and honeycombed interior with lots of space.
I want it to resist a little when I tear off the corner.
I want to hear the sweet, crisp crunchy sound when I’m biting into it.
I want to taste the flavour of the butter melting out on my tongue.
I want that subtle taste of salt.
I want the smell of creamy butter.
Oh, and I want crumbs.
It’s not too much to ask, is it?
I’ve tried Continental Bakery, Rainbow Bakery, Four Seasons Bakery, La Boheme, La Croisette, and many more…
It’s here somewhere. But where?
Please tell. I promise not to eat them all.

I love their sourdough. Look out for the array of wild sized holes – a tell-tale sign that a baker is kneading the dough well, aerating it properly, and knows his stuff. This is no ordinary sourdough, this is World Class. Little wonder it’s their signature bread.
Anyway, back to the croissants. I'm so excited...Ryan - the baking chef - has been working hard to perfect his recipe, and is using Lescure french butter. My expectations are high (see above) and today I got my mitts on my first half dozen (RM3.50 each). Roll on lunch!
It's probably best to order unless you get up early. It looks like the secret's out already. Gold dust or what?
The Baking Garage - 45, Lebuh Lembah Permai 4, Tanjung Bungah, Penang.
Meanwhile, here’s a picture of holes, oh and a few of the croissants.

In case anyone is interested in Chiffon Cake. (Actually I have no idea what a chiffon cake is.) But this is for a good cause anyway.

A little behind the times. For croissants I mainly go to Love a Loaf on Vantage next to Tesco. I am munching a Tesco croissant as I write this, not too bad at all. Also Four Seasons at Straits Quay do pretty decent croissants but they open at 11 am. Pourquoi?

Je ne sais pas.
Oops we're both banned (Site Rule 17)
Is Four Seasons the place near where The Library used to be?

Love scones?
Snap!
The good news is that Ryan, the baker at the Baking Garage, home of Penang’s best croissants, now makes scones once a week.
The bad news? With raisins.
God damn it. I hate raisins. Christmas cake, mince pies, fruit cake – No thank you. I even pick them out of the Alpen. Can’t stand ‘em.
BUT ask nicely, and Ryan may make you a separate batch of plain scones to order. Yippee!
A big dollop of Devonshire clotted cream (I love you Cold Storage), a little French jam (times three), a slice of homemade Victoria Sponge cake (OK, two slices).
Ah, life’s not so bad, eh?
