Investment Options
Lads& Ladies...
I am moving to Malaysia as a MM2H retiree at ripe old age of 52..I plan to move some money (around 1-2 M MYR) to Malaysia to ensure I dont have to ruin my nails by working...
Would like some ideas/advise/black magic tricks.. regarding passive investment (CD Ladder, some kind of bank notes/DCI (dual currency investment) etc, that member of this esteemed forum have found useful/fruitful... etc.. it will be shame to let the money sit in the bank and rot in a savings account etc.
Anyone suggesting a viable option will be awarded a virtual beer....or two

Re: Investment Options
True that.. however, I am posting as a general discussion topic, not expecting advise tailored to my situation. Your anecdotal stuff (xyz bank is offering special on CD rate.. .my mattress pays 6.9%.. is just fine).
Sharing some personal ideas (I bought shares in rubber trees, they turned out to be plastic ) is also fine..
In short a discussion around low management overheadideas about parking money.. as opposed to bank savings account.. i am interested in other ppls experiences...good or bad
I searched the topic on the forums and did not find a good thread on the subject.

Maybe investing in Index funds ETF would be a good idea. Try googling for it and do your research about it, and after that, if you feel comfortable, go for it.

Re: Investment Options
A friend of mine started selling Musang Kings and Birdnests to China, seems to be quite successful. Maybe you can also do some export business to your home country.
It is no use to bring your stock market accounts to Malaysia, no advantage at all. But the Malaysia banks will always happily sell you all kinds of investment funds which they call "Unit Trust" here.
FD hunting is very popular, join in with us all

Re: Investment Options
There appear to be some reservations/consternation regarding this topic (Investment choice), along the similar lines to asking Trump for his Tax Returns..
I never meant to ask anyone about details of their personal finances (only online accounts and passwords plz)... just exploring what are useful options in MY for new investors, and some friendly advise (watch out for plastic trees and Kopi Jantan etc) ..
some of you have reached out and suggested a few options via private message, I am thankful for that consideration. I do not intend to setup a business and/or work in MY.. unless something goes wrong drastically.. Thanks y'all for off/online comments.

Re: Investment Options
In the current climate putting money in the bank is not a good idea.
Stock market is one good options for long term.
However beware, stock market investments is not for faint of heart, nervous nellies. or impulsive individuals.

Regarding FD hunting:
https://ringgitplus.com/en/fixed-deposit/
But being a preferred customer one can get better rates.
Also the banks tend to give better rates for new monies brought to the bank. Meaning FD renewal rates will be lower. Some solve this by changing banks....

The information from ringgitplus is not really useful in my opinion, at least not for preferred or premium clients.
Not just for money changing, this is always valid: All rates are negotiable

Re: Investment Options
EcdD,
I didn't mean money changing, that is better done in the bureaus. I meant that when you bring fresh money to a bank to make an FD, you are likely to get a better interest rate than when renewing existing FD's.
One way of taking advantage of this is to move the money from one local bank to another.
I agree with that the ringgitplus info is not so useful. But it gives a general idea about the present minimum rates.

Re: Investment Options
Are you sure that you want to do this? You may want to seriously consider to keep the bulk of your retirement funds in your home country and only transfer to Malaysia those sums that you need to cover your costs here.

Today I put money in the "unfixed deposit" at CIMB. Preferred get 4,1% for 12 month and they did not insist on "fresh funds". I was prepared for some nego, not needed this time. Of cause you can shift from one bank to another if they insist on fresh, guess they will improve their offer to avoid this.

Re: Investment Options
The golden rule of investment planning is diversity.
If needing the money in the future I would advise separate Unit Trusts/Managed Funds in a variety of markets.
10 years ago I invested in Emerging Markets/Smaller Eu Companies with Templeton/Schroder/JP Morgan etc (6 x GBP7,000 each = GBP42,000) Today that portfolio is valued at GBP355,000.
Last June the GBP was higher but, because the investments were diversified in many currencies, the rise in value has taken care of the exchange rate.
UK institutions value their portfolios in GBP and USA institutions in US$.
Given Malaysia will have an election by next August, and the possibility of a conflict due to Najib's financial woe, I'd be hesitant to convert much foreign money into MYR until that's resolved.
Also, I understood that any investments, within Malaysia, would attract taxation whereas, if invested abroad, it avoids Malaysian tax....is that still correct?

Re: Investment Options
For those waiting for the GBP to rise it went up today!
Transferwise will exchange GBP1,000 for MYR5,528 net of charges.
edit: in the last 10 mins gone to MYR5,534...tomorrow may be a good day to buy MYR with GBP.
