I've searched & can't find the info I require.
Looking for advice on what our options are in regards to growing our own veg. Which type grow best and where to buy seeds etc.
We live in a condo & our balcony has the sun the whole day.
I have a 5yr old daughter eager to start growing her own veg/fruit again as we did back home.
Cheers

You can try to get baby plants from nurseries but I am not sure where you are at.
I had seen a few on the mainland, Butterworth.
Alternatively you can also try Tesco or Aeon gardening section. I have seen some seeds, that comes in small packets.

I've seen seeds at TESCO and also at hardware stores. Green beans are easy to grow from seed and like good sun. Try for the trailing type rather than bush beans. Trailing ones can be trained around an upright stick or even string tied to a high point. Snap peas are easy too. Squash/courgettes are easy to grow from seed but take quite a bit of space. Ditto cucumbers, though there are climbing varieties. Tomatoes are good in pots but you would have to find plant starts. Same for capsicum. Carrots can be done from seed but their seed is very tiny and needs to be started in very fine soil, preferably soil mixed with sand. Potatoes you could do from a regular market potato: cut some small chunks that have a few "ëyes" in them and cover them with a few inches of soil in a large pot or even a bucket. You have to be a bit patient to wait fro the green leaves that will pop up. Enjoy!

Many thanks to you both.
Hoping to get started as soon as we can with it.
Fingers crossed we're successful!

Good luck! It is such a great experience for kids. Oh and you asked about fruit--strawberries are fairly easy but you would need plant starts. Grapes take some space but could be nice on a balcony--except they might attract bees… Most fruit grows on trees. There is so much information and advice online. I hope you can find the seeds/plant starts you need.

I'm planning the same thing! Only balcony space available. Would like to hear how you get on

Hoping to grow my own herbs too. Fingers crossed they'll survive the harsh heat and humidity here.

I have a friend who grows herbs and sells them, so I guess it is possible.

Do you know where they get their seeds from?

My friend says that she buys actual plants from Lorong Kulit market (behind the stadium). She says very difficult to grow from seeds in this climate.

Lorong Kulit is near the Penang General Hospital... its within walking distance. Do go early as its a morning market.

Strangely enough, I bumped into my chum this afternoon. She said to go there on Friday or Saturday morning to catch the "herb man". The market itself is only open Fri, Sat and Sun 8am to 2pm and she says Best go early as the parking is dreadful. It's a bit hit and miss what the herb man has, but usually can get rosemary, thyme, parsley, oregano and chilli...usually RM 8 per plant. She says he's the only one selling plants and flowers there.
