Hi guys
Im a newbie to the forum, but have been reading quite a few posts. You all sound really knowledgeable.
My wife and I are keen to explore moving to Malaysia with our little baby but we're not teachers or close to retirement. We've travelled in Malaysia, lots of SE Asia and other places so are familiar with some aspects.
How realistic is it to consider moving there though if we're not in the categories above?
Sounds like we should get a minimum of a job offer before departing UK to sort visas?
Is that the best starting point, finding a job first woud you say?
KL might sound like it's out of our budget even before looking at jobs.
Any advice would be great

KL out of your budget???
It may be the most expensive in Malaysia but it's not that expensive.
I wouldn't think there are many other places where you might get paid a KL salary but where it costs proportionately less to live.
Doom and gloom as usual from me.

Welcome to the forum
Yes you obviously need to think how you are going to fund your stay, and how to get a visa . And healthcare..... And schooling for the future..... Lots to consider.

And saving for retirement as many expats get caught in a country with no state pension provision, and no eligibility for even a basic UK state pension.

Life is dirt cheap if you live the local way. It is unbelievable how cheap apartments are here (far away from the center and no good or zero connection with public transport).
But if you want to live in a nice condo in BB or KLCC than things are slightly different.
About the schooling, I don´t know if foreigners have to pay for it. Most Westeners send their kids to superexpensive international schools and most Mainlanders to private schools that also are not cheap at all.

or Long Term Visa if married to a Malaysian.

One advantage in moving and working in Asia is that you will most likely pay low income tax. That is great for saving. It's what we did and retired early, but you must be disciplined with money, and remember that healthcare will be private and have to be paid for out of your own pocket.
Just food for thought anyway.
