Hi all, what are rules about home brew? Is that a stupid question? I haven't researched, just chipped in as a newbie. If PET bottles, yeast, sugar and Apple juice available to buy in ten days you can have mean turbo cider.

Mmm I wouldn't have thought it would be allowed. Alcohol is heavily taxed so....if Gov was missing out on the tax....

What the eye doesn't see, the heart doesn't grieve over.

Let's be honest, you'd have to be pretty unlucky to get done for brewing cider!!

Carlsberg and Guinness on offer in Tesco. Personally, I'm not a fan of tinned G but someone might fancy a tipple for the New Year.

I'm quite surprised that want of posts related to Ale!

Anyone know any places that sell IPAs or Adnams in KL?

After some hunting around KL and networking with my expat friends, I was directed to this place: http://tapsbeerbar.my/thetaplist.html

Still haven't checked it out yet but will do so over the next few days while I have some bandwidth before starting work.

Yeah they're a bit steep but I don't know anywhere else that serves ale; they're probably milking the market for all its worth before someone else gets the same idea.

I was very surprised, and delighted, to find some Tetleys FreeFlow in Port Dickson Giant just before Christmas. Very good they were too!

Went to Taps yesterday. Enjoyed an IPA and smoked beer.

Place was packed and a live band was playing the best of The Police and the Beatles; was a bit surreal seeing and hearing the (very well sung!) words being crooned by a 50-odd year old Chinese man.

In terms of the environment it's only noisy if you're seated inside where you'll get the full brunt of the live band; the seated areas outside are cooled by large fans and are quiet enough for you to have a good conversation without raising your voice.

Pictures attached.

Sounds like a good venue though, thanks for the report.

Re: The Beer Thread

Hi guys,

Saw this thread and it's exciting!

Sadly Malaysia's beer brewing market is monopolised by the two big (we know who they are) due to the limitation on brewing license issued. The rest of the beer labels are basically imported stuff.

There are 4 places in Klang Valley for craft beer but two sells IPA: Taps and Ales&Lagers in Publika. The latter one is where you can buy and bring home but they have a few tables and chairs you can sit and do testers.

The other two are Bruxale in Bangsar Telawi 3 and Beer Junction in Sunsuria Avenue, Kota Damansara. The former sells beer from Brussels and later English beer labels.

Hope this one helps. :D

Hmm... I think your first obstacle is getting the brewing licence!

http://thirstmag.com/feature/beer/be...a-Beer-History

Looks like they have stopped giving out brewing licence since 2005. :(

Hubby home brews in the UK. Says yes, but not too sure he'll have room in suitcase for hops... in competition with my shoe collection.

Looking forward to many things about our move to KL this summer but not the cost of Real ale. :(

Not sure if these licenses are commercial licenses or local brewer-type licenses.

Will ask around.

Lou, it's an idea in the making; a castle in the air at this point of time.

However if you and your partner should fancy a lager or an ale at any point during your time here hit me up!

Commercial license is the only one available in Malaysia. There is no need for any license if you brew at home. It's in the culture of aboriginal people to brew rice wine, we call it tuak.

You can get a Cooper brewing kit in Singapore iBrew and bring it back. Though, the tank is massive!

Lou, see if you can free some space in your suitcase for your hubby's brewkit!

Re: The Beer Thread

I'm not very keen on the stuff to be honest, but like to keep a few cans in the fridge in case of unexpected visitors :sneaky:

Just an observation.... I was in Tesco today and I thought I might buy a pack of beers, but where have they gone? I went down the aisle marked "bir". Nothing. Not a can in sight. Has Tesco stopped selling beer?

I also noticed in Cold Storage t'other day that the packs of beer were an outrageous price. Admittedly I haven't bought any for a while but I seem to recall paying RM 30 or thereabouts for a pack of 6 cans. And I was seeing upwards of RM 43. What's going on?

Great idea. I shall give an ice cold Tiger to some poor fellow you've made very thirsty IVV. Right now.

Namely me. Cheers!

First test match just starting from Headingly...............YEAH a beer is an excellent plan. Good few hours sat down for the next 5 nights.

Shop around everywhere to find Tigers for well less than 40RM one of the shops usually has them on offer. Tesco has gone nuts recently.
Strangely the cheapest I saw was 99 Speedmart I think around 32 for 6 Tigers.

Last time I bought some in Tesco it was RM128 for 24 cans. Who buys 6 at a time anyway?

That should be the price to pay for sure................dunno who buys 6 packs BUT sometimes its cheaper per can in six packs as opposed to 24's in Tesco...........Bulk buy does not always work here.
Single cans in my small shop last week 5.35 ..........24 for 132!!.. Tesco wanted 184 approx. and 42 for 6 No Logic.

That's an easy one. BakedBean. She's a smart lass. Knows that six packs are often (almost always) a better deal than 24's. Especially in Tesco where they can't add up. So that's no six packs of Tiger and no Fat Bird to be found in Penang whenever there's a deal on, unless you can beat BB to it.

Can't believe it's been two years since!

I'll be in Hubba Hubba Mont Kiara for a beer this evening - then probably head to that Irish pub in Publika.

Hit me up if you're in the area!

Hi BB,
I went to Tesco Tanjong Tokong Penang today. The beer has been moved to the ‘wine department’. The whole central aisle/display unit of the wine department is now just beer. I guess that means there’s even less wine now.

Gosh I bought a six pack of beer today and it was only RM 31.90. Looks like the reason for moving beer into the wine section is that you now have to pay for beer in that section (along with the wine and pork). So, no more paying for beer at the general check-out. That's what the lady told me

That is mostly how it works in that Tesco. But sometimes they don't have staff to man the cash register. In those cases you have to pay at the regular cash register. Don't forget to hold up the goods in the air for the barcode scanner, as the staff is not willing to touch the items.

For anyone not quite following, what we are talking about here is Tesco in Tanjung Tokong Penang where Pork products and now (all) Alcohol are sold within an enclosed area. That enclosed area is manned my non-muslim staff and has its own cash till where you pay for those products.

I have not had any problems with muslim cashiers in Tesco or Cold Storage scanning and handling alcohol themselves at the main check out. But I don't put any pork products on the conveyor belt, holding them up in the air like SushiFan recommends.
