Hello,
You have a few options for helpers -- hire through an agency and pay large fee's for doing so. You'll also probably have to wait up to 3 months for your helper to arrive.
Second option: Obtain someone through word of mouth. Put the word out through friends, friends helpers, a notice at your childs school, husbands workplace, your condo etc etc. Once the word gets around, you'll find maids texting you for interviews etc. My maid of 3 years has just retired so I went through this process very recently.
Not sure about drivers -- never needed one.

Out of interest, how much do these types of helpers get paid?

It's not just how much they get paid, in Singapore anyway.
It's how much the Government levy is.
IIRC in Singapore in toto it'll cost S$1000 ish pm for an Indonesian maid.
More for a Filippina maid.
It'll be much less in Malaysia but by how much???

Surely the ex pats take on this type of work on a 'casual' basis

We have an Indonesian lady who comes and cleans and mops the house once a week. She does 4 hours for RM 50.

The Philippines Embassy in Malaysia sets a minimum wage for their workers of $400USD per month (around 1200rm). Many people pay more than this, 1600rm and above is typical and I've heard of people paying up to 2200rm and beyond! Its all negotiable.
Indonesian maids can be less but getting them into the country and set up with visa etc will cost minimum 8000rm. The Indonesian govt recently stated that there will be no more maids sent to Malaysia after 2017.

AJW.... Im sure there are expats who earn a little here and there to suplement their incomes ... students as an example ... surley not every ex pat is sitting on a stash :-)
Also, would some ex pats not like the idea of having someone from their own country rather than local do some bits and pieces

--You're more likely to find students working in bars or restaurants.
-- Not really, no. And its very rare to find a local who will do household domestic work. Mostly from Indonesia or the Philippines.
