She has a very spunky personality.

She turns 5 in November noticed a couple grey hair under her chin today. 5 years for a dog is apparently 36 in human years so almost my age lol

She was on an IV...the vet said I should make an appointment to see a specialist. The following day she had a scan which revealed she had stomach cancer. I asked the Vet what he would do if she was his dog...he said she wouldn’t be going home.

I couldn’t bring myself to do it as she seemed pretty normal that day. He said she has about a month...that was the beginning of December. At the end of December she deteriorated quickly and I had to have her put to sleep. We have had 9 dogs over the years and Belle was the third we had put to sleep. It doesn’t get any easier.

Dogs win our hearts but in the end they break our hearts.

Realised that this was last August when I really thought the end had come..Our vet pulled her back, its been months of trying different pills to ease the stiffness in her back legs. She has had a good quality of life due to that care.A tooth fell out two weeks ago and we knew something nasty was going on. Took her to the vets last night and he suspected a tumour. OH has taken her in first thing this morning for an exploratory op. I am braced once again for the bad news
You have been so brave Jerseygirl I couldn't be there right at the end for Ria .I said goodbye to her at home and OH took her to the vet ( in the Netherlands) He said the vet had been wonderful ,to both of them. He took them into his study ,which had a couple of armchairs,a roaring fire, and a hearthrug. He poured two whiskeys and Ria settled down on the rug and fell asleep. They chatted ,then at one point he simple bent down and gave her the injection. Such a kind thing to do.

Sorry to be such a maudlin mess once again....Not expecting any miracles this time

Unbelievable Senga Dog did rally... She was such a strong dog. The vet said her heart and lungs were incredible
You will see that I said 'was'

She seemed so much better once we took her off the antibiotics. OH said she had a real spring in her step yesterday when he took her for her usual nightly walk
This morning however it was obvious to me she was in pain. We called out our vet to the house as we knew this was it. He was fantastic . Senga passed away peacefully in her basket. He could see from the sunken area in her head that the abscess in her jaw had indeed been cancer . ( the biopsy hadn't been conclusive ).
I am devastated and heartbroken ..but I knew I couldn't keep her with me any longer .. My beautiful girl is gone.

So sorry to hear your sad news about Senga Dog, you have done her the final kindness of the unwritten contract between pet and owner. It is never easy, but is indeed the right thing and in your heart of hearts you know this despite the pain of the empty space.

Thank you so much for all your kind thoughts everyone... I think we pet owners are given such a special gift. The company and trust of an innocent animal ( or other ). We care for them, feed them ,treat them when they are ill. Wether they are with us for a couple of years ,or the almost 14 yrs that Senga Dog was with me.We have poured our love into the relationship. Maybe the best part of us. Thats gone ..
The memories remain .Its all too raw right now ,but I know we will go on to give another dog a home sometime in the future...

My condolences too Nutek, I hope it was relatively quick and painless for her. She will live on through your memories and the lovely pictures you have of her.

I rarely comment on such losses because it reminds me of my own, but Emily looked to have everything a dog could want - security within a loving family. That was your gift to her, which, I am sure, she repaid a thousand times.

It does get better, but nothing quite fills the hole they leave in your heart.
Better just means that you think about them less often, but when you are reminded........ oh dear.
You can only be grateful for the time they were in your life.

Thank you everyone. However bad this is right now, I wouldn't trade a single day less with her for it. However hard this is, I cannot imaging us without a dog in our lives.

She was my friend and I love her. She cant be replaced. But a new, different friend... Maybe.

You're completely right. This just comes with the territory of sharing our lives with animals. Unless you have a giant tortoise from the Galapagos or something their lifespans are just shorter than ours - but our and their lives are enriched by the sharing. These are true symbiotic relationships. And in a little time, another friend is more than possible.

Exactly this for us but with cats. In due course you almost certainly will be ready to honour the friendship you had with Emily by sharing your life and friendship with another pet. You have more to give and somewhere there is/will be a new friend to receive your love.

I realise many do not agree with this...but I get another dog straight away...quite often one that looks the same. Looking after a new dog or pup...keeps me busy and helps me to overcome the grief. Don’t get me wrong...I will never, ever forget any of my furry family.

Thank you. She was such a good friend. Horribly missed .. the house is way too empty at the moment.

It is nice to see Leila posted here. It would be too easy to allow this thread to be full of only sad news. She is a cutie.. I suspect she knows exactly how to leverage that to get her own way. Not that you would fall for that, of course. ;)

We are looking too, so who knows.. Hopefully my next news here will also be happy. :)

You'll find one. There are many dogs to love and be loved. They don't replace each other, and they don't have to. It's an additive process :)
