Never heard "elephant" used like that, the number of syllables doesn't sit right in my head.

That's what I was wondering. Perhaps there was a grey before the elephant or something
Having said that, the first two and last two for Mississippi are maybe shorter ones.

I asked my MIL if she knew what was used in French and she'd never heard of any version.

In French it's suggested to use "crocodile" and you need three to cover one kilometre.
