Bevs' Albatross Cam

I thought I would share this for those interested.
This is a short piece of old vid by Lyndon Perriman. He's an absolute hero in my eyes. Without him and his patience there would be no webcam for instance. He was not only about looking after the albies and the colony, he was about educating . Unfortunately , after decades of hard work nurturing , promoting and caring 24/7 365 for the colony, he suddenly left. I suspect internal strife and politics. A huge loss for the albatross and the colony. That man is a legend.

Edit: I was interested in finding out more about Mr Perriman and found this, it certainly seems that your suspicions about internal strife and management policies are well founded. https://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/c...spur-criticism

He went to work with the Kaikoura seal colony following the bad quake. He was there some time whilst the new roading and rail track happened. There was a need to protect the seals and ensure they would reform their colony .That would still have been within the Nz Dept of Conservation but under differing overall management as Kaikoura is in a different district altogether. He would still have been able to be close with albatross and mollyhawks though if he wished. Not that there is a colony there but seabirds fly to the area to feed.
He is now back in his home town and area of Dunedin Otago doing tours. Horizon Tours.
A bit wasted if you ask me. His passion and devotion is to the only mainland albatross colony in the world. His knowledge and know how is astounding but not surprising given just how long he was a ranger there. He is the soul of the colony.

Over the long term we would expect all these biases to even out to be 50/50.
On the 3 March, day 33 the chick weighed in at 2.34kg. This is very close to the weight that last years female chick, Karere, was at the same age.
The graphs on the Track the Chicks weight page show the average growth of male and female chicks, not the full range of what weights could be at any given age.

If anyone is around or can wind back with the 12 hours.
18.29pm NZ time is fun.
Parent is wishing to fall asleep and plops down but chick is too large for that now.
she will be post guard any day now.

When I was watching earlier it was funny to see how the chick doesn't quite fit anymore.
