OMG so many duties - so little time!

Educating someone about opera is impossible; all I could possible do is give a few pointers. From there it's exploring and seeing what graps you, speaks to your heart.
These days there are scores of collections of 'Opera's Greatest Hits' with some of the greatest singers of the recent past - available at your local Borders, B&N etc for under a tenner.
From there, explore some Highlights of the big 4 Mozart's (Don G, Cosi, Figaro, Magic Flute), some Puccini (esp. Tosca) and Verdi (Rigoletto, Aida, Otello... etc).
There's now quite a large selection of opera DVDs that will set you back less than the cost of a ticket for a life performance. (Though beware of some of the Met DVDs - some of them are a bit stodgy; check out Amazon reviews f=before buying...)
There are 3 proper films (as opposed to filmed stage performances) that I would highly recommend:
- Don Giovanni (Joseph Losey) - with Raimondi, teKanava, etc
- Carmen (Rosi) - with Domingo, Raimondi etc
- Tosca (Benoit Jaquot) - with Angela Giorghiu, Roberto Alagna... and Raimondi

Have fun!

Mexicans like brains for breakfast in some areas. My multiculturalism ended right there.

We're very open minded.
Or incoherent.
I can never remember which.
