A wee beastie in my water tank. I'm no herpetologist but I suspect he's a midwife toad.

Damn, someone's joined in!

I thought I was going to win the thread or have it named after me if I went 3 posts without a response.

Beautiful tree mac - what is it? Blossom looks like cherry to me although I can't see in enough detail. Tree looks a bit broad for its height for a fruiting variety though. And the Alentejo pic - is that your very own lake? Is it well-stocked with trout?

Sorry about that.....

The tree is indeed a non-fruiting Cherry (or at least, the fruits are tiny). It has been in bloom for well over a fortnight now, but has taken a battering from the wind. I also have a Quince tree - just showing the furry pre-flowers and new leaves and a Bay tree that we "liberated" from a pot we brought from London and is now 4 feet across. At the back I have a Bird cherry and an acer which are still bare, a couple of large wild plum trees (one yellow fruit, one red fruit) which are just starting to show and 2 apple trees which are also just thinking about waking up - and a huge old Oak tree just outside my garden boundary. The temperature has plummeted since I took that pic. it was -1c the night before last and single figures when I went out yesterday.

Yes, that's my "barragem". On the Alentejo planicie they have "charcas" dug as water holes, but in the hills we have "barragems", where they choose a vale and dam the free side to form a large pond/small lake. God knows how many and how long it took without machines!! No trout (I thought they liked running water) or other fish, but turtles and frogs to serenade us on summer nights (the barragem is about 250 metres from the house, Some of the turtles are the size of dinner-plates, but it's really, really hard to see them as they disappear as soon as anyone approaches.

It's not a vast area around the house, just under 3Ha, but enough to breathe and huge enough for a part-timer like me! The field in the foreground is sown with oats, just to keep it turning over.... but other than that I let the neighbour's sheep act as God's lawnmowers. I have Azinheira and pera brava plus abundant cistus (too abundant), a few old quince that I'm trying to recuperate (and failing miserably), some medronheiro and a few pinheiro manso, plus a few pomegranate trees, wild cherry, plum, pear and and numerous huge yucca (3 metres tall) in the "garden" area close to the house (which is mainly Taipa). I took the picture because the barragem had filled after the rain in late December/early January...... in October I could see the bottom and was getting worried about the turtles!!

The view in my kitchen yesterday. Trying to use up some ingredients. A very tasty fruit loaf.

Yes son, you are correct! It is a mini bottle brush. We have about 10 of the larger growing trees on our lots that are just starting to bud. They are great for bees and butterflies and humming birds.

It looks quite different to my bottlebrush in Portugal, stalk and leaf-wise...... yours looks almost succulent-like

This isn't mine, but it's the same..... mine grows a bit "leggy" and SWMBO isn't a fan..... I think because she considers it a bit useless alongside its neighbouring Pomegranate, Pear and Plum trees. I just love the almost constant colour.

I'm surprised that delicious-looking cake's still there - I thought Nutek would've downloaded it by now.
