Gary Lineker made a good point: You get a red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity, but you also get a penalty which is a goal scoring opportunity. It's strange.

laws actually state it if where the foul concludes, not begins.

it was a penalty.

I am not gonna get stressed about it as it will make no difference, Barca were always going through in my view.

I won't convince you and you won't convince me and it was ever thus!

UEFA seeks end to triple punishment

UEFA referees asked to avert triple punishment

FIFA Rule 12

FIFA Laws of the Game 2013-14
Direct free kick
A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
kicks or attempts to kick an opponent
trips or attempts to trip an opponent
jumps at an opponent
charges an opponent
strikes or attempts to strike an opponent
pushes an opponent
tackles an opponent

A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following three offences:
holds an opponent
spits at an opponent
handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)

A direct free kick is taken from the place where the offence occurred (see Law 13 - Position of free kick).

Penalty kick
A penalty kick is awarded if any of the above ten offences is committed by a player inside his own penalty area, irrespective of the position of the ball, provided it is in play.

It appears to be where the defending player is positioned at the time of the offence, not where the ball is.

please don't muddy the water over manc's assertion by providing the actual facts - they have no place here - better to make up your own laws

It's all interpretation, no? Like the UEFA fair play laws?

It just looked like a penalty to me. Not that I cared. It means nothing - United are going to win this again this year, no-one can stop us now. We've had a 2 week holiday and it will be a new fresh attitude at the weekend as we destroy Palace away. I can't wait.

Good luck to Swansea, Everton, Sunderland and Stoke this weekend.

God, are we still on about that?

Even I wish he'd missed the ****ing penalty now, just to stop this debate.
