Agree with your first point above.

However, premier league dominance? We won a title because Utd bottled it under pressure and a second one last year because of the Gerrard slip and Liverpool implosion. Other than that it was been more than 40 years since we won the top tier of English football. Winning 2 titles on goal difference and by 2 points hardly equals dominance!

PS and we only have the second most expensively assembled squad in Manchester now so are hardly likely to dominate!

Transfer fees paid for current squad:

Manchester United £401.2m
Manchester City £344.15m
Chelsea £341.8m
Liverpool £245.8m
Arsenal £209.5m

8M for Cleverley to Villa. I'm surprised Utd have that much left to spare.

Best news I've heard all summer- a player who has truly 'stunk the house out' for nearly 3 seasons, he needs a new club, we need a genuine top-class midfielder....

I'm personally paying Nani's wages while he's on loan. Worth every penny.

There's talk of Welbeck coming to the Lane on loan

And by the way, when am I being invited round for some curried goat and rum punch??

It's going to interesting when Cleverley tells Roy Keane he plays as a midfield general.

Until they win the big one their PL dominance means nothing.
Liverpool have won the 'Champions League' once. United have twice.

In regards to the top European competition, Liverpool have won it five times, while United have won it three times.

And lol and PL dominance means nothing.

This has to be the most pedantic post in the thread. You'll be breaking the League Cup down in to Milk and whatever its been called over the years next.

Well, yes and no, I do have the feeling that while the current top european competition is easier to get into (top 3 or 4 is enough) I'd say its much harder to win. Once you are down to the last 16 now there are no pushover teams, and you have to win a lot more games to take the trophy.

The old school European cup was very exclusive as it was league winners only, but even with the most rose tinted glasses on Crusaders of Northern Ireland , Trabzonspor of Turkey, Saint-Étienne and then TFC Zürich in the semis is hardly the most taxing run imaginable to get to the final!

Back then you were limited to maybe 3 or 4 decent teams in the whole thing, the champions of Spain, Germany, Italy etc; now you can meet 3 or 4 decent teams from any one of those countries.

Still, you can only beat who they put in front of you I suppose. The real achievement signified by Liverpool's European success is it demonstrates just how dominant they were domestically to be competing for the old cup year after year.

I do think it harder now, partly for the reasons you state, but also because now you are nearly always in the same competition as this years league winners, in the old days, this years winners were often in the UEFA Cup, which was then a cup worthy of winning.

I was making a point to the poster I quoted.

Not taking away from Liverpool's achievement, if that is what you're applying. Their run was incredible, and I doubt we will see an English team ever achieve such a feat in Europe (in regards to the amount they won in such a short period of time).

Any time you like. Please bring some decent tea with you. I thought Africa was bad when it came to getting a decent mug of tea in the morning. At least I finally have decent internet so no more porn buffering issues.

We got Blind, it seems. That's a bit more like it. I think Anderson, Kagawa and Cleverley are almost certainly all off. Did you see the team we fielded 3 years ago this week to whack Arsenal 8-2? It was packed full of crap. Just shows how Fergie was able to squeeze quality from nothing. Lots of talk about how he is to blame for where we are today, which I think is justified. I guess he assumed Woodward was at least reasonably smart and could pick up where Gill finished off. Sadly buying peanuts like Obertan should have raised flags a few years ago. City bought Toure, Silva and Dzeko, we bought Bebe.

Shame Zaha didn't work out, he looked alright. I'm still really disappointed we never really built on '92 and developed a proper policy of developing teams from the youth. Buying 6 players at a cost of millions has turned us into the Chavs or Citeh. It doesn't feel right at all.

We just sold Daniel Agger back to Denmark. Yeah he was overrated at times - but he did a steady job when we really were a 6th-place-ish team. And it's nice to actually see some fringe players let go. So let's chop Coates, Assaidi and a couple others who will never ever play. Plus it's marvelous to see the sudden swathes of Liverpool fans begging the club to get shot of Johnson for being a) shit at defending, b) always at fault for cocking up formations, and c) being a colossally arrogant prick. I'm also confused as to why if we bolstered our midfield (plus got some loan players back and better) that utter gash like Joe Allen is in the squad. He's so lukewarm a player.

Hey Man United - why not buy Alex Song from Barcelona? He's better than almost the entire midfield you have, is definitely available, would be dirt cheap and had an almost telepathic understanding with RVP for 18 months at Arsenal. Because all that wank about getting Hummels or Reus is not going to happen. Not this year. I bet he'd be available for single figures and slot right in. Mind you Xabi Alonso would have - quite why Real insist on selling their best, most important midfielder every year beggars belief.

Would someone mind freeing Scott Sinclair from Citeh too? It'd actually be nice to see him play football instead of warming the "not even in the match day squad" bench. Be cheap too.

And last call - Benteke has to be available no? I'd nick Weimann from Villa too - great little squad player. But Benteke there makes no sense. At a better club he might actually progress into the player he is for 1/3 the season.
