Another poor race. Another poor penalty. No wonder F1 is haemorrhaging support at an advancing rate.

As Devil's Advocate might I suggest that Hamilton's pressure on Vettel was sufficient to force Vettel off track, thereby warranting a 5 second penalty!

Disclaimer: I didn't actually watch the race!

Only a poor penalty if you buy the BS Vettel came out with to explain it. Or did he drive like Schumacher and was really try to block Hamilton deliberately. Personally I think he is a cheating piece of shit who got his comeuppance.

I try so hard to call myself a fan, but yesterday was dull beyond belief.

As for the Vettel/Hamilton lark, yeah I think Vettel went of because of the pressure, can't decide on the penalty, I've argued with myself about it, but leaning to a little harsh

The worst parts.................Hamilton whining on the radio about the 'off', and then Vettel acting like a spoiled brat afterwords, as MC said its no surprise F1 is losing support.

Oh as a BTW now I'm back in the UK didn't realise I had to pay thru the ar5e to watch F1 here, good job I 'accidentally' found VPN and ESPN!

Ferrari has appealed so not over yet.

In real time I thought it was a clear penalty but having watched all the replays think it was a 50/50 that can be argued both ways...

So possibly just a "racing incident" then?

yeah exactly. For me it depends on whether Vettel steered right to block Hamilton or had to put right lock on to stop his rear end flipping out. Based on Vettel's hysterical reaction I tend to feel it was most likely the latter

I thought the race was actually not bad. There were lots of mini-battles throughout and prior to the Vettel / Hamilton incident it looked like we were going to have an exciting fight for the win.

The cynic in me says Vettel knew what he was doing and let the car go all the way across.
The F1 lover in me says it doesn't ****ing matter, it's racing just get on with it.
The Hamilton fan in me says it's a fair penalty and is consistent with some of the other similar penalties we've had.

Lost control, drove off track, straight back on in front of another driver. I am surprised at the contoversy. Let's say we take Vettel at his word, "where was I supposed to go", the result still created a dodgy situation, 5 point penalty. If it was proved as intentional, 5 seconds would be too little.

I’d like to know on what grounds as you cannot appeal a 5 second time penalty.

not sure but saw this:

“At the moment, we, as a team, are naturally disappointed,” said Binotto in a statement posted on the Ferrari official website.

“As for Seb, I don’t think he could have done things differently, which is why we have decided to appeal the Stewards’ decision.”

Under the sport’s regulations, Ferrari have 96 hours from the end of the race to gather evidence to support their appeal.

also found this:

Ferrari has now confirmed its intention to appeal the decision, with the stewards document stating: “Competitors are reminded that they have the right to appeal certain decisions of the stewards, in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Article 9.1.1 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules”. Those articles state any appeal would be heard by the International Court of Appeal.

Having lodged its intention, Ferrari now has 96 hours to decide whether to appeal the stewards decision, which would require the team to provide fresh evidence.

The 2019 Sporting Regulations state that a time penalty, drive-through, stop-and-go, reprimand or grid drop cannot be appealed, but Williams appealed a three-place grid penalty for Sergey Sirotkin after last year’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix. On that occasion, a preliminary FIA hearing felt there was no new evidence presented and dismissed the appeal.

So they may just be appealing to give Vettel 96 hours to get his toys back in the pram....

so Ferrari has pulled the appeal as the 96 hours they had to provide new evidence turned up no new evidence.

I stand by my assertion that the appeal was merely tantrum management by Ferrari

I don't have any issues with that. If merely a formal demonstration of their upset at a decision. It'll certainly make stewards think twice about similar punishments.

I don't think the rule was badly applied.. I just think there are too many damn rules.

I keep watching... I don't know why any more. Stubbornness after watching for SO many years? How has this become so dull?
