Default Telephones

Hi everyone! Can anyone tell me if UK cordless telephones work in Italy? My house in Italy has phone sockets with "3 prong holes". Is it possible to buy an plug/adapter that also has a connector for a UK telephone? Just wondering, as I have fairly new phones and it seems a shame to "bin" them! I'm trying to sort as much as I can before I arrive in Italy! It's a nightmare as I'm sure most of you will know! Any advice is welcome! Thanks

I think I tried this and the answer was no. Something to do (I think) with the way the signalling unit works at the exchange (you pick up the phone and the phone requests a line to be opened)

you wil no doubt get a proper technical answer

I can't directly answer your question but you can buy cordless phones in Italy for less than 20 Euro.

Thanks johnny and chris for getting back to me! Think I'll just buy new ones in Italy if they're that cheap! Any idea of a web site where I can view them on line? By the way, what about computers bought in the UK? I think I've seen "3 pronged plugs" that have a phone jack connector? Have I dreamt this or do they exist? And, are these 3 pronged sockets "all the rage" in Italy or is my house desperately in need of an upgrade? Sorry for all the technical questions, but my husbands "crap" at this! and I'm not much better! hahahaha

We brought cordless phones down from England in December, work no problem at all. The only thing is that the charges have uk plug/transformers combined, so you can't just change the plug, have to use travel adaptors with them.

The 3 pin phone socket is the norm, but you can get an adaptor for computers too, so no problem.

Hi Margaret
Thanks for that! I might take them anyway and give it a go, but doesn't your cordless telephone have a RJ45 (i think thats what it is), connection on it that plugs into the telephone extension socket? My main cordless telephone (from a BT Digital Studio Twin set) has a sort of a "base" with it that has a lead and a RJ45 on it, my extension phone only has a plug charger on it. Totally confused now!! haha

Perhaps you mean an RJ11, often called an AT&T connection

You often find newer installations uses the RJ11 socket but if not you can by a little adapter for a euro or so.

RJ45 is just a big bigger and used for Ethernet network connections (your modem socket will be a RJ11 and your network RJ45)

Our cordless phones and base unit from the UK all work OK here too - not sure about all the adaptors you mention (or invented!) but I will ask hubby later and see if he knows

As an aside, to save us from having to change a million plugs to European ones, before we came to Italy we bought a few cheap 1 metre UK extension leads and my husband changed the plugs on them, so you can plug in UK applicances to them and just have one Euro plug into the wall. Also very useful as the electric sockets here have no 'off' switch (not in this house anyway!) so you can at least turn things off completely by using the extension leads in this way. Just thought that might be a useful tip for you

I would check on your insurance if UK plugs are acceptable on appliances.

Hi to everyone!
Thanks for all your info and advice which I've taken note of! I'll keep you all informed as I progress (might be a while though)!! Hoping to arrive in Italy in approx 1 months time, but will depend how long it takes to set my internet and telephone up - and I'll be in Calabria - so might take longer than usual! Thanks again!
