SIMPLE Codice Fiscale question

Hello everyone,
I must first say how impressed I am by this forum and grateful to all who contribute!
I have read all the posts dealing with the Codice Fiscale and haven't found the answer. My question is as follows:
Do I need a registered residence to get the codice fiscale or is a passport and unregistered address enough?
I've been here, Rome, nearly a month. I was told by a friend to avoid bureaucracy until I am sure about staying (I'm giving it a go and loving it so far). I need a CF for something this week so I'm willing to spend a morning at the Agenzia della Entrate (wanted to go today but realized it was a holiday just before I left the house. lucky me!).
The question is, in other words:
Can I just give them my address in Rome on the form without it being registered at the Anagrafe? Does one depend on the other?
grazie mille!
Jim

Hi Everyone,
Just a passport, photocopy of the passport, and the form were indeed enough. I wrote down the address but was not asked for registration documents.
THANK YOU!

Yesterday I at the local post office I was told I couldn't apply for a PostePay carta without that damn official thing that says 'this is my codice fiscale'.

That sounds odd. I was given a paper codice fiscale immediately and then got a plastic one later.
Go to your "agenzia delle entrate" office and just tell them you need one.

I've used a CF written on a scrap of paper for 6 years without a problem. The official paper is filed away somewhere and would take forever to dig out. I never recieved a plastic card. Did you have to ask for a card?

He went to the offices and told them that his paper card had become scrappy and the ink almost invisible after years of being in his wallet - and they sent him a plastic one to his home address.
Give it a go. Tell them you've lost it. Tell them it fell to bits in the washing machine. A replacement should be free. If you can't memorise your CF then plastic is easy enough to keep in a purse or wallet. I know mine off by heart now as I've had to write it out SO many times. No way have I memorised the kids' or the OH's though.
