I personally don't know anything about it but I did have a friend here up North who tried it and said it was total rubbish.
He has since moved house and has adsl coverage now so it's no longer a problem for him.

It was over 12 months ago that my friend tried it.
Hopefully reception has improved since then, especially as it seems that you have no other option.

There are smaller local companies that offer wireless and hyper-LAN services that you should check out in your area. They need to attach a radio antenna to your roof. Our company uses this technology as we're not covered by ADSL. Which is a bit silly because we're in an industrial area surrounded by lots of large factories. However our max download speed is 1,5mb and the actual speed is not far off, usually about 1,4mb. Our upload speed is guaranteed at 0,64mb which is important for maintaining our website and again, the actual speed is usually double or more. The company we use is Telemar but I don't think they cover your area however their website has info on the technology. Just check the yellow pages for similar companies.

I moved out of Rome and was horrified to find that I couldn't get adsl. I investigated all the alternatives and ended up just using a 3G modem with 3. My speed varies, but it's typically around 1Mbit/s and costs about 20 euro/month for 5GB. I tend to use about 150MB a day and I work from home and use the internet all day.

I looked at satellite and besides being expensive to set up, I read that the capping is quite bad. After 1 or 2GB they start throttling your speed until it's at dial up modem speed. They do this while saying that it's "unlimited" still. Also the latency is very high as I'm sure you've read.

I've also read about wimax suppliers and haven't seen all that many good reviews either, but there's no coverage round here anyway.

There's a really good site to read about all this stuff here: http://www.antidigitaldivide.org/
