If it was not for them we would be a small island stuck in the middle of nowwhere:

Mr posh - you teach English? Her Maj would not be terribly impressed with your grammar -

My parents and grandparents did not fight for the Saxe Coburg Gothe family. They fought to stop Hitler - some of the Windsors btw thought (and still think) he was a top bloke. All said, I reckon Liz has done a pretty good job in the circumstances, but whether that justifies making trifle and pretending that Great Britain still exists on 29 April is open to doubt.

I will be watching the wedding if it's on TV somewhere.:D
ciao for now,

I'm pretty sure that italians are fascinated by European Monarchies, Grimaldi, Windsor,Borbon,....otherwise we wouldn't have them so often on magazines and tv..
Savoia?!! mmhmm....No, thanks...
Emanuele Filiberto reminds me Maria De Filippi's career : too serious at the beginning to turn into a fool later..
His father, Vittorio Emanuele has some skeletons in his cupboard, he shot dead somebody in the 70s, but never spent a day in jail....
They have lost that Royal appeal to me..

You ain't got nothing better to do then look at my grammar, sad life you must lead :(

I just think that the royal wedding is an important thing for the UK and we should as English abroad be proud; or do most of you sit with "Italian friends" and knock the Royal Family and slag them off? 1 thing is for sure I would rather have our Queen any day of the week than Silvio B

It's certainly going to be a big moment in the UK. Whether one should be proud or not over this particular royal wedding is personal choice. Not being pro-active about it in Italy doesn't necessarily mean that one is not proud enough - it might just mean that one wants to keep a low key profile.

Who knows? There are plenty of Italians who couldn't give a damn and any Englishman walking into their midst might just get the piss taken out of him. Rather than defending his ideas and opinions all day on the royal family - that same man might just decide to stay at home and watch the whole thing in private with his Earl Grey and his flag. Who knows?

I'm pretty sure that any man or woman wanting to avoid the whole thing will have a hard time doing so as it will be transmitted in the following weeks over and over again on various TV channels- at least the highlights will.

Doesn't pride come before a fall??

You know I'm fascinated by a lot of things, doesn't mean I want them for myself.....

I hardly ever consider the royals, unless someone posts on here about them! (Btw, Silvlo isn't Head of State. Napolitano is.)

If there was no royal family then who would they put on the coins and the notes? Famous Brits? Like Shakespeare, Darwin, Churchill, the guy who invented the Scouts and coffee jugs Boden, Beckham...

I don't feel any duty to defend the monarchy just because I'm British; however, I don't accept the terms "knock" and "slag off". If my Italian friends (without inverted commas) have something to say about the British monarchy or any other institution, I try to give a balanced reply. When they talk about the costs, I mention the enormous costs of Italian bureaucracy and of the Vatican (which in my opinion is an Italian institution). If they say that an unelected head of state is undemocratic I agree, but if they ask why the British, then, don't get rid of the Monarchy I say that they don't see the need to, as life under constitutional monarchies is much the same as in a republic. I nevertheless state at the end of the discussion that I would prefer a republic.
I would not like to have to choose between the Queen and Silvio B.! There must be other options open;)

Finally, I think both anglophobes and anglophiles are to be avoided; they're equally ignorant about life in Britain.

More likely the new reality TV "stars" like Jordan, Kerry Katona, or bad singers loke Cheril Cole or even sleazeballs like Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, etc, the list is endless.

Ah, I rember the last royal street party it was the highlight of the year, mum sat for weeks making red, white and blue crepe paper carnations:)My personal opinion; they're getting married, happy for them . They're spending alot of money for it,so what a lot of so called "normal" people get into debt for that special day.I personaly won't be watching it :)

Re: Royal wedding

:)Not to be pedantic or anything, but it does annoy me when posters talk about Berlusconi being President. Berlusconi is Prime Minister, elected by the voters, whether we like him or not (I do:D). President of the Republic is Giorgio Napolitano, an ex Communist, nice chap, quite harmless, and elected by Parliament, not the voters; although in Parliament of course due to being voted in the first place. The cost of the Presidenza del Consiglio (Cabinet) and the upkeep of the Presidenza della Republica and the Quirinale etc. is far superior to that proportion paid to the Royal Family by British taxpayers. And since we're on the subject, the Vatican is absolutely nothing to do with the Italian state. A totally independent state in its own right.
sorry for going on a bit.
