Default Moving to Puglia

Hi

A complete newcomer here ....!

I've bought a house in Puglia and plan to be there 7 - 9 months a year. My major concern is regarding getting broadband in the house and also getting UK Sky TV as I am an avid cricket fan !!

Will I need to get a landline telephone line installed in order to get broadband and wifi ?

Does UKTV anywhere work ok - and will I need broadband for this too ?

Thanks

John

Not sure on the broadband in your specific location but if you do have anything 4mb + you can get your SKY UK via SKYGo, if you have access to an account in the UK.

Broadband is your key, you also get Filmon which streams live UK TV Channels.

You can 'test drive' both of these whilst in the UK maybe?

A lot depends on the 'where in Puglia' question !?

Cheers and good luck,

PSG

we get sky via a dish we used to get ITV C4 and C5 before they changed from Astra 2d you can get C4 (Ireland)

adsl/landline depends where your property is and how far from the nearest exchange it is. If your property is out in the countryside it will be difficult to get a landline

Hi and thanks for your reply

The problem is that SkyGo doesn't work outside of UK ...... unless you know a way around the block Sky put on. It's the same with BBC iPlayer

Thanks. We'll be in the small coastal town of Santa Maria al Bagno, Nardo.

I think I'll need to visit a store I've found called Media City

John, just a thought but you can try a VPN provider like expatshield (not recommending that one in particular but just a name I remembered) to get around the blocks. They just give you a proxy IP so Sky or Beeb think you are actually in the UK.

I watch UK cricket, rugby and football using a free streaming site called cricfree - not top quality pictures but I get my sporting fix from it. There was another site I used to use called firstrowsport and there is also a directory for free streaming of sports called wiziwig - have a google and see whether any of those might meet your requirement.

good luck

We have been in Puglia for almost nine years and struggled with this for a long time.

ADSL is still not available to us and without ADSL there is no point in the expense of a landline.

We tried satellite and found it very expensive and very restrictive on downloads with speeds slowing to virtually zero.

Puglia has a big committment to WiFi and many areas are served by a number of WiFi providers.

We have always been on the edge of the coverage areas for the majority for all the main WiFi providers. Until now we have used a number of the mobile phone opertators wifi offerings. They work fine but are restrictive on bandwidth for downloads and not suitable for TV.

We now have Linkem ..... although we are on the edge of their coverage area the engineer came out (after the intervention of a friendly local neighbour), tested the signal on a high pole on the roof ... and immediately installed Linkem for us.

No bandwidth limitations and reasonable speeds ...... now we can watch live UK TV on FilmOn. Also download TV episodes / films and watch at a time more convenient to us.

Good luck with your move to Puglia.

Hi John,

You need a VPN, I have used 'My Private Network' for years SUPERB support when/if needed here is a link https://www.my-private-network.co.uk/
About £5 per month, this gets you into the UK, with zero problems for SKYgo.

For a bit more money...........MAG250 box (google it) with a service, this will cost some £15 per month and you get pretty much EVERYTHING.............SKY, BT Sport ............the lot !

And of course FOC you have FILMON which surely you can try in the UK before you arrive here, it's pretty much seamless.

ALL of the above is assuming you are blessed with a decent (circa 4mb) internet connection !
