Default Milan - realistic cost of living

Hi everyone --

Moving to Milan in early 2014 to do my Masters.

Id like to ask if anyone can give me an idea of "comfortable" cost of living.

At the moment, Im working on a budget of 2600 Euros per month.

It may sound a lot / a little depending on your location on the income scale, but Ive been living in South Africa for the past few years and on 2500 Euros you live incredibly well and Id probably think twice about going to Milan if 2600 Euros meant having to live very modestly.

Ive come to 2600 based on:

- 1500 for rent (private 1 bedroom apartment)
- 500 for food
- 200 for elect / lights
- 100 for wifi / mobile phone etc
- 300 for misc purchases / going out / transport

Any advice, costings appreciated.

Thanks.

I think your numbers stack up. Good luck. Obviously you are discounting (not allowing for fees) in the cost of your masters. Witwatersrand, and I know nothing about SA, so I apologise for my ignorance, but there are masters and masters. Are you really sure about Italy? Bocconi? Otherwise, maybe think a bit more.

I think 2600 is more than enough...just to give you some ideas:

-I pay 30€ a month for unlimited internet (20 mbit)
-10€ for mobile phone (including 1GB of internet, 300 mins and 300 sms...I have to add that I don't text or talk to people that much)
-300€ yearly public transportation card (or 30€ monthly one)
-around 30€ a month for electricity
-with 1500€ you can get something bigger than a one bedroom flat..I think 1100-1200€ should be fine for that..of course it also depends on the location but I think 1500€ is too pessimistic...

for food, going out etc. it's tricky and depends on the person...but in supermarkets I spend around 160€-200€ monthly..

I hope this is of some help..
