Has anyone had experience with this registration procedure?
In another thread Modicasa kindly brought this acronym to my attention (standing for Anagrafe Italiani Residenti All'Estero.)
It seems it's necessary for Italian citizens to register with it if they move abroad for more than one year.
from the Government site (in English) : "The following people shall register with A.I.R.E:

– citizens who transfer their residence abroad for periods of over 12 months;

(...)

The following people shall not register with A.I.R.E:

– people who go abroad for a period of time shorter than one year;....."

However, my situation will likely be different in one, possibly two, respects: I will not obtain another residency in another (non-EU) country, and secondly, I can't be sure that I will not return, if only for a brief period, within a year. I intend to travel around from one country to another.

I'm wondering if when registering with AIRE one has to specify an overseas address of residency.
If not, I suppose there's no loss in registering with it, even if returning with less than one year away.

Any experiences here with AIRE?

Yes, I am registered on AIRE and the registration is linked to your overseas address as that’s where they send voting papers etc.

Id say that if you dont get residency in another country (or even an address) then as far as the Italian state is concerned, you are just on holiday. Obviously that means that you should still submit your tax returns etc here though.

All Italians have to register either in Italy, or anywhere else if staying for more than 90 days. It is a legal requirement and you could be fined for not doing so. If you are not staying more than 90 days, it shouldn't be aa problem if you can prove it, but you should ask the local Italian consulate Worth noting, that without a registration, you cannot renew any documents.

Do you mean register with AIRE? Because in the extract I pasted it says not required less than 1 year.

To be specific:. You need to register if you are out of Italy for more than a year or if you already live out side Italy. Once you officially emigrate you have 90 days to inscribe in the register. So at the maxium you have 364 + 90 days to get registered but only if you are emigrating to take residence in another country. If you are travelling, or going on a very long cruise, I suspect it wont apply - you could ask at a consulate....

I'm reviving this thread with further details, and any further thoughts of members are welcome.

I ended my presence Italy on 18 June by leaving my rented apartment and did not rent another place. I am now in Asia where I don't intend to get residency anywhere.

I asked my local anagrafe about the AIRE procedure. They directed me to a new site called Fast It AIRE consular portal (that name is already setting itself up!) where one can register a foreign residence. (https://serviziconsolari.esteri.it/ScoFE/index.sco )

The problem is that the site requires one enter a residence in the new city and country. As I'm travelling on short term visas, and renewing these or moving on to another country, this becomes impossible, as no residency is taken.
I pointed this out to my anagrafe and they responded:

"essendo Lei cittadino italiano la sua residenza può essere cancellata in due modi:
1) iscrizione AIRE
2) per irreperibilità accertata (il cui procedimento è già in corso).

Lei dovrebbe iscriversi all'AIRE all'indirizzo a cui attualmente è, e ogni volta che si sposta dovrebbe procedere a un cambio di indirizzo estero sempre tramite il portale di cui sopra.

Se la sua situazione è che si sposta ogni 2/3 giorni, sarà cancellato per irreperibilità non avendo una fissa dimora."

Should I take this to mean that since I haven't registered another address in Italy and that I can't register with AIRE a foreign residence, my status will automatically default to 'no fixed abode' in Italy, but not to go on the AIRE register?

No. The anagrafe will just delete your residency.

Are you saying, as far as the anagrafe is concerned, if I haven't registered another Italy address nor registered my absence from Italy with AIRE at a foreign address, I'm NOT of 'no fixed abode' in Italy? A sort of limbo between non-residency and non-'no fixed abode'?

Also, thoughts on this please: do we think next year's 730 tax return will be possible? I worked in Italy to May and had a residency address. When I go to CAF next year, will they need to see a current address in Italy (or somewhere else) in order to do a 2025 tax return?

If you are senza dimora in Italy, and cant be inscribed in the AIRE you should elect domicile in the comune of birth, or at a friends or parents place or in extremis in the last comune where you were resident. HOwever, its a legal requirement to b inscribed in the AIRE, and the fines are high, so cant you elect a foreign address of a relative to be your AIRE address for the forseeable future?

Yes, domicile is different from residence of course. The Fast It AIRE registration site asks for residence address. I suppose I could put my sister's address in the UK. on the AIRE form.
