House insurance - Sicily
Would be grateful for any advice re: insuring our newly acquired house on Sicily (Noto hinterland). It has been bought as our main residence where we will move permanently in about 1/2 months time. Only house required at present and although in an earthquake zone, would also want to cover against fire. Some online advice suggests insuring in UK easier but all I've found thus far relates to holiday homes. Many thanks for any help.

You are moving to Italy and will be resident there. There is no reason why any UK insurer would want to take that on. Use Italian and search out one which gives seismic cover - there arent many. Generali is one,

I do not think anybody where we live has home insurance. We asked about it from a few people and were warned against it. "They will sell it to you, but just you try to make a claim!"
If anybody has evidence to the contrary, I would be pleased to hear. I still don't feel comfortable without it.

Several years ago I was also insured with an Italian company -two in succession in fact -and neither of them paid out on what were by all accounts legitimate claims. Since then I have been insured with Intasure, for my permanent residence in Rome, and a holiday home abroad; both properties have seismic and landslide cover. They are a UK based company but if and when Brexit happens they have assured me they will continue with the same cover, but will amalgamate with Nordic, for EU directive purposes. I hasten to add I have made several claims over the years with satisfactory results. It's true to say however, that quotes are a fair bit higher in comparison to Italian companies.
