Not too sure what you read, but this is quite clear on the NHS site. IF asked for you need insurance cover, take a look at what Modi and Lorna has said.

If you are resident in Italy and usingtheItalian health service, then I would have thought you should have Italian insurance - I cant think why it would be illegal. Other companies such as AXA, Cattolica Unipol and Allianz all do basic health insurance policies.

First stop- a good commercialista
Hi Greg
You say you are working for a UK company but live in Italy for more than six months of the year. Your first step then should be to see a commercialista to work out how to invoice your English company and define your exact status here in Italy. You will have to take out a partita IVA if you want to be a freelancer but there are different regimes such as the "forfetario" where you are taxed at 15% but can't deduct costs. My commercialista did everything for me and got me registered in 24 hours. For my different activities there was no need to do anything else and I used my tax registration forms to obtain residency. The only other thing that they may ask for, depending on where you live, is medical insurance for 1 year but this does not mean full medical insurance but rather a complementary insurance that does not cost very much (see other posts on this forum). The good news about tax is that there are lots of new laws reducing tax to only 5% for the first five years of activity for instance or for freelancers who move to Italy. In this latter case you only pay tax on 30% of your income for 5 years. There are also possible reductions on the obligatory INPS pension contributions - so first find a good commercialista!

Re: First stop- a good commercialista
Hi Nick,
This is all great information so thanks for that.
I am a few steps down the line from my last messages and so I am able to update.
I got my health insurance with Generali for 300euro for 1 year.
This allowed me to file my residency application with work contract, lodging contract, codice fiscale, and passport.
Today I had my visit from the Polizia and so am officially have the right to remain.
Now comes the registration of my work activities.
So next obvious steps looks to be to find a GOOD commercialista who knows about these new tax laws for 5 years of 5% and freelancers moving to Italy.
Would you happen to have any official names for these Nick?
