Depends what it includes. the best advice I got was off this forum.
That was make sure you get the zero waiver as you will definitely get a bump or scrape. When I returned my vehicle (full cover and yes someone scraped us) we paid nothing, but 2 parties at the desk were being charged €1100 and €2000 for small scrapes and dents. There was wars on!! Get full cover!!

It's the waiver that's important on this one...

When the CDW coverage can cost almost as much as the basic rental rate, the CDW coverage through your credit card is a very nice little perk.

I also just noticed an ambiguity in my post - I meant that US credit cards provide CDW coverage in many countries, not that credit cards from many countries provide CDW coverage (I don't know whether or not that is true, but I suspect not).

I hadn't realised that about the credit card. I have visa and amex. I will check that out!!!
Italy has very different car hire rules to both uk and america...as is the driving:there!!!!(terrifying, esp. Rome!!)combined with the narrow streets. I can see why the car hire companies do it.
they have cdw but with different levels of exclusions. but the level of punishment metered out on small scrapes was way over the top.I had assumed the cdw was the same as the uk/usa, but it isnt...
I learned that from this forum and without that info it would probably have cost me €1-2000 luckily I paid the extra waiver approx £100 for 2 weeks.
I am now thinking that credit card may have saved me that lol. still better safe than sorry.

When we were here for a week house hunting in Feb we used a firm called worldwide travel insurance to cover the excesses. It cost us £18 for a week. Much cheaper than the car hire companies. Just showed them the agreement when we got to the airport.
