I think you would be amazed what snoopers can glean from your activity. Any site you log on to will likely indicate your pattern of passwords etc. Your login name, email address… All linked up on/with any hacked credit card or bank details and they are in. Very, very sophisticated are these horrible people now and it’s not just what can be lost, it’s the dammed inconvenience of any disruption they make to your cards and/or accounts becoming inaccessible for any length of time..

I know but I have a theory.

Every trick us mere internet mortals find to protect ourselves the hackers were probably doing 20years ago and have already done the work arounds to trace/hack you anyway.

A lot of effort for when someone eventually invests enough time to hack your data they will anyway. The same theory applies to cars, I always park my car next to the most expensive one I can find in the car park, who will want to steal mine then?

I just think the more you try and hide the more people think you have something worth hiding...

Just me though.. I am sure I will get caught out one day and will rue the day I didn't listen

Horses for courses - I only watch Only Connect (I'm an addict) and some sport which can't be viewed in Italy (mainly cricket) but my wife really misses UK programs and as her Italian is weaker than mine, I can understand that.

I don't think you need to be hacked or spied upon. It might just come down to business.
There is a Euro1000 fine for anyone doing illegal downloading in Italy. If your ISP sells your internet history to a legal studio they might always attempt to threaten a fine even if they can't prove anything.

British TV has gone downhill anyway. There are a couple of nice things maybe but not enough to really get me going down a whole VPN route or anything.

Maybe I just don't love TV enough but I certainly didnt come to Italy to watch British TV..... I can do that in Britain lol
I wonder if there is an Italian Eastenders.Phil Mitchell dubbed in Italian maybe, lol.

I use tvcatchup here in the Philippines. Works very well most of the time. Early evening can be slow as all the Filipinos home from work MUST catch up on Facebook! Will watch lunchtime news on BBC One in 20 minutes..........

Has anyone mentioned Britbox? It's straight up, legit access to British TV, no VPN required, though you can't get all British TV shows.

When I tried it said that it was only available in the US and Canada

Britbox only available in Dixie
I doubt the BBC would agree "straight up, legit access"

Britbox is jointly owned by the BBC, with ITV plc.

For those of you that have shorter visits here in Italy, holiday homes perhaps. A friend using a UK mobile here under the recent EU change allowing the use of a UK contract/PAYG within the EU, found that it also acted as a VPN! Using their data allowance to hotspot they could access UK sites that normally need a VPN. I’ve checked this out by trying and failing to access UK sites using my WIND SIM, then switching to a UK SIM and it does work. Not tested it out on the BBC yet, but I’m pretty sure it will work. My friend and I both use GiffGaff, so I’ve not been able to test this with any other UK carriers as yet. Might be of some use to people here finding this post.

Geordie - a mobile internet dongle can be a good option for that. We used one when we first moved here as I needed the internet for work straightaway while we waited for TIM to set up the line. It worked pretty well, the only issue was the bandwidth on roaming was nowhere near good enough for streaming. Not sure if that would be the case with all operators but worth bearing in mind.
