Default double residnecy

Hi there Expat Guru's

I am currently working for a British company in Italy on an A1 form and am based out there for either 4 or 8 months of the year.
I am a British resident but in order to use the childcare services in Italy i need to be a resident.
Is this doable?
Can i be resident in the UK, so I can be seconded to work in Italy, and be a resident in Italy using the childcare or would this mess up the emplyemnt side of things?

Many thanks fr your help

George

You can only be a resident of one country, the rules are that you become tax resident if you spend 183 days or more in that country, as 183 days is more than half a year you can see that you can only be tax resident in one country.

Italy could consider you to be tax resident here even if you do not spend 183 days a year here if your kids are in school. How old are your children?

So you will be looking for a nido (or whatever it is called now). Have you looked into the cost? Depending where you live, a place isn't guaranteed and if you do get lucky, the fees are based on your family income. A private Nido might not be as costly as you think.

Someone I know was on secondment here, but was able to obtain residency. Took a bit more paperwork and the company sorted any additional tax incurred by living in Italy. I'm sure you know that there is a 2year limit for secondment within the EU.

You said that your son has an ID card. So he is resident? With whom? Not being curious, but presumably one of his parents is resident. Isn't that enough.

Ah, get it know. Is there something stopping just mum and junior get.residency? Junior would be higher up on the list for care.

your wife and your son are Italian. They have the rights to education and health care. If your wife is registered in the AIRE then she is resident, but in a foreign country. You are the problem, being neither italian or resident!

That's true Modicasa, but nido's are usually hugely oversubscribed so places will go to local residents first.

I would discourage you becoming a resident here so that you can have your son in pre-school.

You will be hit with horrendous taxation.
