Given the mutations that we know about, and that the virus always seems to mutate into a bigger meaner version, isnt it then possible that there was the virus in circulation well before last spring, but in a milder pre-mutated version, that most people took for flu, bronchitis, bad cold?

I think this is highly unlikely Modi. They have been sequencing millions of viruses all over the world this last year and if a hypothetical proto-covid virus existed they would have found it somewhere. If it existed before February why would it have suddenly disappeared and not been picked up? The Chinese would love to find it as it would back up their idea that the virus originated outside China.

I have two friends who have both worked in hospitals here in Italy for over 30 years each and still do. Both have told me privately that back in December before "proper"Covid was announced, there were patients in ICU diagnosed with what the hospital was then calling "abnormal pneumonia".
