And how do you propose that people do that? Anyone can send you an email purporting to be from a hotmail address and it will never touch a hotmail server.
Remove 'Java' from your machines
Why? A miniscule fraction of vulnerabilities have come from java.
Disable HTML formatting in your email
Well, I don't disagree with this since I don't use an html capable email reader. But the chances of the average person being able to read email with html disabled is practically nil these days unfortunately.
Use Firefox with adblock
Fine, but does this have much to do with security? Of course you get supposed adverts that say you're infected with x,y,z, please pay $100, but if someone is capable of installing adblock they're probably capable of ignoring stupid adverts like that too. Personally I use noscript and have no reason to use adblock as practically no adverts work with javascript disabled anyway.,
Don't visit porn sites...
yawn. what's that got to do with anything?
Dont let your kids use the computer without parental control
I just don't let my child use windows. That solves almost everything.

I'm still laughing at the suggestion of not visiting porn sites. It's what the internet was invented for wasn't it?

incorrect - html affects presentation and not the content in the majority of cases

its everything to do with security (data) or simply having to avoid a re-install of the OS

'stupid adverts' are not the only source of downloading a virus - on a daily basis, often just for minutes, reputable sites are compromised

make sensible comments if you want but don't bash down when you clearly have little knowledge of how a virus/root attack/etc works either in distubution or in execution

If you say so. I'll give up my day job of 20 years in computer security then.

sorry but I find this a bit infantile.

you pick up nasties if you visit the wrong sort of places, follow links in emails from people you don't know, knowing you shouldnt but WTH it might be interesting.

might as well ban cars because people have accidents in them, people come out of side turnings without looking, drive too fast and cant stop. It isnt the car its the driver.

in both instances it keeps people who pretend they know better in work, work they wouldnt have if we all kept to the pathway without deviating, avoiding the lumps and bumps in life, not using that natural curiosity that has got man where he is today.

Yeah who needs trained and skilled professionals? You can just Google everything now! I certainly don't need a doctor anymore. I just diagnosed that I suffer from Cotard's Syndrome - usually during working hours.
