At the moment we live in Padova and have our residency and Carte d'Identita for our address here.
If we want to move to another area such as Vicenza or Turin is it an easy process to re-register our residency in that new area? Is it a fairly simple process to do now because we are already in the 'system'? or do all the requirements like proving we have work, having the police around to check we do live there all start again?

Hi Linda,
it should be much easier than the first time. You just go to the anagrafe in your new comune and tell them you have changed your residency. Take your ID card with you and your passport too.
The police will still come out and check though - they did when I moved from one comune to another one.
Don't forget to cancel residency in the old comune for comune bills. I got caught out with that thinking it would be automatic and it wasn't. I ended up paying two different lots of comune rubbish bills.

Thanks Lorna. I can remember you saying ages ago about not cancelling that bill and getting charged twice I think
Our bills are in the process (long and slow process!!) of being closed down for our rented house but the companies are funny. We went to see our water and rubbish people after a couple of months to say we hadn't received anything from them and to explain that we might not be here (in Italy) too much longer to receive and therefore pay any bills and the lady simply shrugged and said well, they couldn't send bills to other countries: we came away and thought well, we've tried to get the bill, they know we're leaving and now we'll get the bill in time or we won't!

My water and rubbish bills only come every six months so that might explain why you hadn't received anything.

Yes .... when I moved the people in the new comune told me to just leave my ID card until it expired. I told them that it had Comune Di Schio on the front of it and not Piovene and they said "doesn't matter - just change it when it expires". It didn't have years left though but it did have quite a few months.
