If I were to buy a second hand video camera from the UK and have it delivered to Italy, would I now have to pay duty on it, or does that
only apply to new goods?
Thanks for any advice.

Edit 1: if somebody (say, a friend or a relative) buys it for you and sends it to you as a gift, then there is the issue of how much this gift is worth. The sender could under-report the value of the item or mark it as "effetti personali" and it will be dealt case by case by the "Dogana". Fatta la legge trovato l'inganno.
Edit 2: is "bologna" in your nick about the city or mortadella? God I miss my bologna (the meat, not the city).

Yes. I mean, no import duties but VAT.

And the Dogana would have to be happy that the second hand item complied with EU regs and was safe Obviously a camera would probably be OK but other items may not
Any duties will also depend on the amount of non UK/EU parts

Not that I would ever eat it, but if you are in the UK can you not treat yourself to it here? I would have thought somewhere like Diforti or Delicatezza or even Ocado would sell such, albeit I would guess quite expensive. There are a number of things we miss such as fririarielli and gorgonzola dolce. The latter we can get most places, but the former is not to many peoples taste and much harder, but Ocado even sell the fresh veg as "turnip tops"!
