Default Building permission

Hi there

Wondered if anyone could help. We live in the Alessandria area and we would like to replace a window with a bigger one. I have tried the comune and the girl who works there does not know if we need permission, she told me to come back when the man who knows is there. Heres the thing when I go back when she says, they are shut or he is not in that day. Also we had a builder to come round and give us a price for changing the window and a few other things and he stated "that we did not need permission it was our house we could do what we like".But our neighbours said that we needed permission. So we are a little confused.

Any help gratefully received

You need permission from the commune if you want to make the window larger .

I'm certainly no expert, but I think you would need it. You are changing the external appearance of the dwelling, therefore the commune would have an interest.

Unfortunately too much advice is handed out saying "it is your house you can do what you want with it". The fact is.........you can't, unless you're prepared to pay a fine when someone finds out.

Why don't you try and ask a Geometra, obviously he might be inclined to say you do need permission as he'll be after work, but at least you'll have heard it from a professional.

Sorry can't give you any more info than that

I'd get in touch with a local geometra and get info from them about what you can and can't do to your windows. I f you lived in the middle of know where you could probably enlarge a little bit without anyone really noticing much but seeing as your neighbors have taken an interest I think you need to do it all the proper way otherwise you might end up with a fine.

I'd agree with all the advice here - if you want to make your window bigger you probably need at the least to advise the Comune and normally you need to submit plans and get permission. A good place to start is with a Geometra who will do everything for you. If you're living in a conservation area (as we are) your plans may have to be approved not only by the Comune but also by a body looking after such areas. The one that relates to our area (Lago Maggiore) is in Turin - perhaps it's the same for you. L
