Re: Border checks
Over the years been back and forth through Switzerland, and sometimes Mont Blanc tunnel via France, literally dozens of times. By car loaded with personal goods, by Landrover Discovery loaded with musical boxes to sell in UK, by Landrover Discovery towing a caravan, and by motorhome full of all sorts of personal stuff. On Swiss borders only ever stopped to check motorway vignette; standard practice; and once coming back at Weil am Rhein stopped to check motorhome weight.
Through France on the other hand been subject to a few stop and search episodes with the motorhome, both on the road and at Eurotunnel Calais.
With your Landrover Discovery you'll be fine going Calais - DuNkirk - Lille - Mons-Namur-Arlon-Luxembourg-Thionville-Metz-Strasbourg-Colmar-Basel-Gothard Tunnel-Chiasso/Como-Milano; and youll be fine in Italy with your GB reg as long as you have valid MOT and Insurance.

Re: Border checks
The migrant issue has changed the "waving through" policy. Every country is worried you hide a migrant. In your case the Swiss might want to have a look. Just recently the Germans stopped a vehicle with Brit. registration carrying a few illegals.

That said, if you're not going to be resident, then you should be fine.

.... for one year after obtaining residence in Italy. You may well get away with it for longer, however there are stories of people having their car impounded after a routine roadside check reveals they've been resident for longer than a year without changing the plates to IT ones.
That said, if you're not going to be resident, then you should be fine.

Re: Border checks
Except, from what I understand, if you are here more than 3 months you are legally supposed to apply for residency!

Re: Border checks
But if you're only visiting and maintaining your usual home and employment/self employment in another country they you likely won't qualify for residency.

Re: Border checks
Not referring to the OP, but tax wise, it is where the centre of your life is that interests the tax office even if you stay out of Italy for more than 183 days a year. É.g. having children at school here could class you as tax resident even if you do not register for residency.
