Average IQ scores, by country

Some decidedly odd-looking results here - National IQ Scores - Country Rankings

Seems to follow stereotypes.

Yes, there must be something wrong here. The ITalians being more intelligent than the North Europeans? Give me a break!

No one has suggested such a thing.

I think that there could be a correlation between IQ and not being genetically programmed to follow rules set by competent foreigners.

Actually if you look at the link Italians score ahead of all Europeans, northern or not.

How can we be sure that some genetically corrupt Italian didn't bribe anyone in order to achieve such results?

Odd results. But I must say that there are so many young Italian people with great minds, they definitely increase the IQ of the entire country, even if they're abroad where the best opportunities can be found in my opinion

It must be wrong. Gioppino has such a high IQ he can tell people's nationality without knowing anything else about them.

Re: Average IQ scores, by country

I suspect it says most about faulty IQ tests or flawed sampling methodology. Given that average IQ is defined as 100, over a country-sized number of people, and a statistically valid sample thereof, the measured IQ should not be significantly different from 100, which at the top end of the list is true, with few over 100, and many at or immediately below 100.

The "long tail" at the lower end is more concerning, and probably reflects the fact that IQ tests are either culturally biased, OR are measuring education, rather than IQ. Some countries scores may reflect the fact the country's education system promotes rote learning and conformity rather than critical/logical thinking.

Re: Average IQ scores, by country

I agree with Pulaski.
In my youth I regularly scored 145 in IQ tests (it's probably gone down now!), but all it shows is how good you are at doing IQ tests. If you do a few for practice you're bound to start getting a higher score as you get the hang of it. In other words IQ tests are a load of b****cks. With some exceptions the league table shows that alleged IQ is lower, the farther people are culturally from the Europeans who chose the criteria for assessing intelligence.
Not many people know that IQ tests were originally invented for measuring progress in education and not for assessing a person intrinsically.

Re: Average IQ scores, by country

Your IQ should not go down as your age is taken into consideration in the calculation.

145 might be 135 or 155 depending on the variation of the I.Q test you took.
(I cannot recall the different names and standards but they vary)

BTW, it was not for measuring progress in education it was to measure the levels of retardation in children

Like anything, you can practise and it you get better, does not make you any smarter then you were, just better at puzzles, which is why joining Mensa actually marks you out as insecure rather than exceptionally bright (IMO)

The long tail in the results is probably due to reading ability and therefore the IQ cannot actually be accurately measured by written examination and it would not really be likely that large number were tested in physical puzzles with oral explanations.

70 or below would put you in danger of meeting more intelligent fruit

Testing accurately below 70 is notoriously difficult, presumably for the reason Beasty noted, of poor reading comprehension. Anyway, an IQ below 70 makes it unlikely that you could be executed in any of the US states that have the death penalty.
