is there any way of stopping the irritating ads whenever I open up a post?

You can pay to become a premium member of BE, and one of the perks is that you don't get the adverts. If you remain just a member, then you have to put up with the adverts I'm afraid.

Click the "My Profile" tab towards the top left, then scroll to the bottom of the links down the lefthand side, and one of the headings under the last ("Miscellaneous") heading is "Paid Subscriptions".
