Default Job Interviews

Hi everyone,

I would like some advice with regards to applying for jobs in NZ. All the sites I have been on say that you should only apply if you have a work permit. I would like to apply for the PR Visa but to be on the safe side I would like to try and secure employment.

Also, any advice would be welcomed with regards to travelling to NZ for job interviews.

Cheers,

Steve

I am currently in NZ and have been for two weeks in order to try and secure work, however the shortage of people does not marry up with reality as when you get here employers:
  • Pidgeon hole you and there is no leeway
  • Will not entertain you unless your experience exactly matches what they do
  • Do not seem that interested in tranferable skills
  • Agencies are dreadful thus far, they really do not put themselves out too much

Happy to expand if you want to know any more.

Hi Robbo25,

Many thanks for the info, I would be grateful if you could expand it. The more info the better.

Another forum member is down there at the moment also, he is also going to let me know how he gets on.

They lie.

I floated my resume out there on seek, and was contacted in the US by an Australian recruiter. He was willing to go through the hoops to get me sponsorship. Then I tracked down his job listing on that site, and the job listing barred unauthorized applicants. The eligibility flag seems to be a default that no one pays attention to. So perhaps you should ignore it too.

Hi,
I actually live in NZ so could maybe give you an insight into employment here. I know of others that have applied for Jobs (outside of NZ) even though the job says you need to be eligible to work here. And lots of jobs aren't even advertised so networking (like everywhere else) will help with this. get yourself known to as many people as possible.
Getting a job depends on the area you are looking at working in and dare I say it, connections.
The industry I work in(teaching) has plenty of UK workers who said they didn't find it too difficult finding work from England.
The more "traditional" areas of work tend to be more hesitant about accepting internationals.
Recruiting agencies are as you suggest generally. From my husband's experience they addvertise jobs that aren't even real so they can get people on their books. Lots of them seem really keen when you meet them but then you don't hear anything from them and have to ring them to find out about jobs. I am not saying all recruitment agencies are like this but some are.
I would try and do as much ground work as possible from your own country before paying to fly out here. try telephone interviews or video conferencing.
Again it really depends what area you are looking for work in.
Hope that helps a bit

Try this website for forums about moving to NZ. it makes for interesting reading and might help with networking
