woohoo, got the thumbs up from ICAA...
well, after a wait of a whole two weeks 
we got a letter from ICAA yesterday saying my OH's skills have been approved so we can now apply for our visa. hurray! It only took the two weeks from end to end including postage both ways so we were well happy with that.
One thing, we only got one copy of the approval, isn't it standard to receive two: one for DIAC and one for us to hold on to?
