Who can certify documents?

Re: Who can certify documents?
Well, slightly different docs but I got my wife's Sgt to certify all my stuff for my Visa Application. Got her to make each one as "True copy of the original document", she signed it, put her rank & collar number on it then stamped each copy with the Official Station Stamp (every Police Station should have one).
Sent these off with my app (Spouse Visa) and my case worker accepted them without any question. Saved me a fortune in fees though my local solicitor would've done them on the cheap as we were selling our house through them (only found this out afterwards).
Even had offers offers for colleagues of mine (I worked for the Police also) to do my Police checks but I went the Official route for these (got Scottish ones in 5 days and English ones within the 40 days - just)

Yes, I have lived in Scotland and England so I needed both checks. If you have only ever lived in Scotland then you only need the Scottish Checks.

Re: Who can certify documents?
I can only go by my own experience and my officer accepted my docs cert by a Police Officer, but like my father used to say "shy bairns get na cake" - in other words if you don't ask you don't get - so ask one of them if they can do it.

The only safe options in the U.K. are solicitor, JP and notary. Anything else carries risk of rejection.

Jaj,
I have a JP who has said he can certify, but he has also told me that no JP or Magistrate ever has a stamp,so how does that work, do they just sign their name, and if the authorities want to check, is there a register that they can check against, to prove that they are who they say they are?

Re: Who can certify documents?
I am soo confused!!!
I've been reading various threads about who can certify documents. It seems this also differs depending on who your assessment provider is.
We will shortly be submitting our ACS skills assessment. We are being told by our agent that the only people in UK who can certify are solicitor, magistrate, justice of peace, notary public and commissioner for oaths.
I thought that it was whoever was able to sign UK passports would do. I don't want to go through this exercise twice so want to make sure whoever signs for our skills assessment with ACS will also be acceptable for the visa application.
Just phoned our magistrates who charge £8 per document As I need triplicate of the docs, don't think this will my option and want to try and keep costs down as much as possible.
Many thanks
