Where do I get the Tax Number

Hi,
I am flying to Sydney, Oct 3rd, for a short visit to validate my PR
visa. I am one of those who lodged the capital investment bond to get
the extra 5 points. In the letters I received from DIMIA, regarding
the investment, it said that unless I have an Australian Tax Number, I
have to pay additional tax on the interest. So I plan to apply for a
tax number once I am in Sydney. Experts and those who have done this
before, could you please advice me where to go to apply for this and
what documents I must produce.

The Australian Tax Office (ATO). Take plenty of ID.

I dont know whether you can really get a tax file number. I suspect
you have to be a "tax resident" for that purpose. If you are just here
to validate your visa, looks like you will not be one?? go to
www.ato.gov.au and find out more.

If you are a resident, you pay the local tax rate. If you are not,
they have to withhold tax from you. Speak to your accountant.

I have gotten my TFN easily done over the internet I did it it the Tax
office at Mt Gravatt, very easy and quick. Got their letter in about
10 days.
You have to be physically here, cant do it with your computer in your
home country.
