When does tax residence start?

When does tax residence start?
We are about to get 410 retirement (temporary residence) visas. We would like to make a preliminary trip to Aus soon to check out a few things, but then return to the UK to tidy up things here.
When will we be regarded as resident for tax purposes in Aus? The day we enter for the short visit (with the 410 visa already granted)? Or the day we return to stay after our last stay in the UK?
Any clues?
Lesley

Re: When does tax residence start?
The Australian Tax Office's definition of residency is different to that of DIMIA. Very simplified it is: if you live (and work?) in Australia (and you're not on a working holiday visa) you are a resident for tax purposes. Use this tool to determine if you are a resident according to ATO: http://www.ato.gov.au/scripts/axos/a...dent.xr4&go=ok

Re: When does tax residence start?
As a general rule, it is an issue of your intention when you enter Australia underpinned (or not as the case may be) by the time you are physically present in Australia, where you consider your permanent place of abode to be, where you are maintaining your economic and social ties, etc.
Tax residency is one of those nebulous and woolly concepts, and where one is spending a fair amount of time in two countries it can be difficult to ascertain the position with certainty.
In essence, if in doubt, take professional advice.
Best regards.

We will be going out in a month's time to "check things out" and open accounts etc, then will go out for good later in the year - which is when I will declare tax residency.
