Depends if your student visa allows that.

Not true - a BVA cannot override a 497.

If you have a 497 and lodge a DD application, a BVA will only kick in
if the 497 expires before the DD application is decided. The BVA in
this circumstance will have the same conditions as the 497 - except
you can't travel overseas on an BVA.

If you have already applied for Graduate Skilled Temporary Visa (UQ 497), but haven't been granted, can you start full time work? Graduate Skilled Temporary Visas sometimes take very long.
Secondly, once you get your Graduate Skilled Temporary Visa, and lodge your PR application in one iof the DD classes, and are then granted a Bridging Visa A, how many hours a week you can work? This is because the Bridging Visa A would overrule the Gradaute Skilled Temporary Visa.

To add to what George has said, if your student visa is expiring you
*must* make a valid application for a 497 or a skilled onshore PR visa
(or some other visa for which you are qualified).

If you let your student visa expire you will be in a mess and will
need competent professional advice ASAP.

You should really get professional advice specific to your case. Lots
of students get themselves into a total mess, often through having a
little knowledge that is dangerous in such a complex area.

Also DIMIA policy can change between now and late 2003. The 497 visa
only costs AUD160 or so to apply for and it may be a safer option.

Dear Engin,

If your student visa is still valid you only have permission to work
according to its conditions (but remembering that if you have finished your
course you would be "out of session" and therefore able to work fulltime).

If your student visa has expired, the bridging visa you hold through
applying for a 497 allows unlimited work. This is an exception to the
normal rule that the conditions on a bridging visa A or B are the same as
the previous substantive visa.

Cheers

Dear Jeremy, George: Thanks for the info. My student visa (with permission to work) says "Permitted to stay in Australia until Jan 22, 2004" but I am finishing my course on September 9, 2003. I think if I finish my course earlier than the date on my visa, the visa would cease to be in effect even though it is valid for much longer. Is this true?
If it continues to be in effect, as George has suggested, I would not need a Grad Temp and can work full time because I will be out of session for the duration till my student's visa runs out.
