Visa Expiry
We're just starting the process of applying for a PR visa. Does anyone know what
conditions are attached to visa regarding expiry time once granted. In other words
how long do you have to 'activate' the visa and is it vaild for 5 years?

Usually the earlier of the expiry of the police certificate and medical check.

Yes. The 5-year period starts from the date the visa is granted, not the date you make your 1st entry into Australia.
