Default UK Inquisitor Strikes Again

Thanks to everyone that's helped me so far, but I've got some more
questions:-
1. To anyone already living in Melbourne, which Building Societies do
you have?
2. Are there car ferries going round the bay off Melbourne. I know
it's possible to get from Portsea to Queenscliff, I just wondered if
you lived in east Melbourne and wanted to go to Torquay/Great Ocean
Road would it be quicker catching a ferry to Queenscliff from
somewhere in Bayside area rather than driving through CBD?
3. What is the average yearly wage for someone with a UK degree?
4. Do children start school full time at 6?
5. Primary school hours 9am to 3.30pm?
6. Do under 7's get much homework?
Any help much appreciated.

pass on that one.

not really, I live down near that area and go down the Aireys/Lorne a bit.
You can scoot straight onto the West Gate Freeway and over towards Geelong
without going into the 'busy' CBD area. Actually easier to get from SE Melb
across that way than the inner Eastern side. Also for anyone near the Ring
Road bypass they have very easy access to the West Gate too.

    > 3. What is the average yearly wage for someone with a UK degree?

very relative.

    > 4. Do children start school full time at 6?

5 year olds start Prep over here, don't know the exact cutoff dates they
work on, but by 6 you're almost definitely into full time school.

    > 5. Primary school hours 9am to 3.30pm?

pretty much, give or take.

    > 6. Do under 7's get much homework?

course not, bit of reading stuff maybe.

Ah, a couple I can answer.

Most children start school full time at around the age of 5 - the school
year starts in very late January, and the rule for entry is that a child
should be 5 before the 30th April of that year to enter. Compulsory
schooling is from the 6th birthday, so it's not uncommon with a child who is
still only four at the start of the school year, to wait another year even
if they will turn 5 by 30th April.

    > 5. Primary school hours 9am to 3.30pm?

Roughly - it varies slightly between different schools, but this is pretty
typical.

    > 6. Do under 7's get much homework?

Depends very much on the school, and often on the individual class teacher.
Most don't give much homework to kids that young, many won't give any at
all.

Most people use banks.

There are two car ferry services in Port Phillip bay.

One crosses the heads from Sorrento to Queenscliff at a cost of about
$40 per car, taking about 45 minutes each way. The distance around the
bay is about 200km. The road system up both sides of the bay is
excellent with the possible exception of heavy traffic between about
Mordialloc and Werribee depending on the time of the day. Unless you
were travelling from south of Geelong to somewhere on the Mornington
Peninsula, you'd typically just drive the long way around.

The other ferry goes to Tasmania.

Car ferries and ferries in general are not significant parts of public
transport here. Ferries are slow, road or rail is far quicker, so unlike
Sydney with it's harbour making land travel longer, we have only tourist
ferries on the bay.

    > 3. What is the average yearly wage for someone with a UK degree?

Anthropology?
Computer Science?
Engineering?
Medicine?
Physics?
Zoology?

    > 4. Do children start school full time at 6?

Many years ago, the new year school intake included children who would
reach the age of 5 by 30th June of that year. Nowdays many children seem
to wait a year longer.

    > 5. Primary school hours 9am to 3.30pm?

Yes.

    > 6. Do under 7's get much homework?

My experience of being under 7 is, shall we say, hopelessly outdated.

Have a look for your profession here

http://jobsearch.gov.au/joboutlook/d...e=2&TextOnly=0

bear in mind this is an Australia wide average, not Melbourne specific.

Rewind a bit. What banking services are you looking for, exactly? The
Australian banking industry is vastly different to the UK one.

It might be quicker on the ferry if you timed it right (and certainly more
scenic), but most would just drive it all the way.

    > 3. What is the average yearly wage for someone with a UK degree?

In what field?

    > 4. Do children start school full time at 6?

Yes.

    > 5. Primary school hours 9am to 3.30pm?

In general, yes.

    > 6. Do under 7's get much homework?

Maybe 15 mins of reading at home per night, and occasional other exercises
to do.

I no longer think you're serious ( I hope you enjoyed my previous answers -
these ones are real!) but...

    > 2. Are there car ferries going round the bay off Melbourne.

There used to be a hovercraft from Frankston to Melbourne, but no-one used
it. A ferry service would be useful, but not a car ferry.

    > 3. What is the average yearly wage for someone with a UK degree?

Between $0 and $1000,000.

    > 4. Do children start school full time at 6?

Yes. Some start at 5. Some at 4.

    > 5. Primary school hours 9am to 3.30pm?

Roughly, yes.

    > 6. Do under 7's get much homework?

No.

    > Any help much appreciated.

Boring.

    > Kim

More (interesting) questions, please.

Used to be you had to turn 5 by June 30 of the year you were starting
school. I think it has been shifted forward to April now.

Yup. My young bloke turns 5 in early May this year, and he can't
start school till next year.

LSE is of very high value, Open University is dubious, Sheffield
University - who knows?
